spot lights- Help Needed Please
« on: May 07, 2007, 10:34:28 »
Hi Guys I have a 96 Disco V8. I have just fitted some spot lights.the wiring was already in place, but they will not work. The lights are fine , the earth is fine but there is no power to them. There isn,t a separate switch that I can find. The wires go back to a relay attached to inner wing . How doI test it?
I then tryed a direct feed from the offside headlight main beam wire. This blew the fuse! Could this be because I am trying to put the normal headlight & two 100 watts additional bulbs through it?

I then got a little bit frustrated, put it all back together & came inside?

HELP!!!!!!!!!

On the reley you should have 4 wires
one for the 12volt feed from the battery, one that goes to the spot lights, then you will have a feed from the main beam wiring and one that goes off to ground. with the main beam switch on test you have power going to the relay from the main beam wiring, Easy way to do this is to get someone to flash the lights while you hold the relay and you should hear and feel it click. If it dont do that then your problem will be with the feed redo the wiring and test again. If it does click then the problem is witht he feed from the battery run a new heavy duty wire from the battery to the relay and try again. if they still dont work doubble check the earth from the spot lights make sure its a good one.

What he said.

First can you get hold of or do you own a multimeter? If you are going to 'fiddle' with your wiring then its a good investment as they are as little as a tenner.
If you have a multimeter you can check for voltage at the relevnat points. The fuse blowing is more likely to be a fuse thats too small or going straight to ground. for 2 spots with 55w bulbs you need 20 amp fuse.
You can use a switch to make them live if you prefer as you may not want to have to be on main beam to have spots working.
you only have 4 wires. earth, live in live out and trigger. Ensure all the wires are sufficient ampage as an under bonnet fire is a real possibility if you skimp.
