Isn't it a pleasure when.....
« on: May 07, 2007, 16:10:07 »
..... everything comes apart really easily?

The pinion bearing has collapsed on the rear axle of the 110. It's a Salisbury axle.... took one look at the manual on how to rebuild it and thought "nooo way!". The local LR specialist suggested 6-8 hours plus parts. Again, I thought "no way!".

So after a few phone calls I have an ex-military axle coming next week.

Put the 110 in the workshop and had the axle out in about 2 hours this morning! Can't be bad. All the bolts came out without any trouble. Even the bottom of the shocks came undone without too much drama.

Don't you just love it when previous liberal use of copper slip pays off?!!

I've done three Salisbury axles. Two while on a course. One at work. One thing for sure I will not ever do another..

Grease, Copperslip or copper grease. There is a big difference. Copperslip is a trade name and should have a capital letter at the beginning.

Actually I use very little coper grease. I much prefere nut lock of some type. That seals the threads and stops them rusting together.
On long bolts I usde copper grease on the shank and thread lock on the threads.

i use copper grease not copperslip.
Copperclip rots seals, try some on some rubber gloves.

OK.... actually it's copper grease. Mainly used for bolt shanks.... Of major importance on the suspension bolts IMHO.

Update....

OK, so it's so much of a pleasure now   I had to repair the chassis area around the rear bump stops so I thought I'd get on with this while the axle was out. Done the LH one, no problem. Got to the RH side an the spring tower is totally shot. Looks like the spring was about to burst through

So now I have to wait for a new tower top arrive before I can get the replacement axle in

I guess it's better I found it now than half way to Eastnor
