POP POP lack of power
« on: May 08, 2007, 17:53:45 »
Hay guys i have a 1990 v8 Carb disco with a problem.  :(

When At 60/70mph going up hill i get a pop sound and lack of power at the same time. This comes from middle/left side of engine. but i cant get  look for any thing as it only happens only when at speed going up hill. A mechanic friend reckons it "could be backfireing through the left carb due to an air leak may be from the gasket under the carb". But he dont no much about carbs and says that is what it sounds like to him at guess.

Can any one help? PLEASE

You know, this rings a bell, but I can't think why :?

Ah, that was it.  Had a similar thing on my 101 when the exhaust was leaking.  Worth checking the exhaust manifold & downpipes from the left hand side?

Worse on LPG? backfire/missfire then.  LPG is so much harder to ignite.  Have you closed your plugs up to 27 thou yet?

NGK BP6ES

Try to avoid BPR6ES as the resister (radio supression) can lower the spark popwer.

If you've got £50 odd spare then BPR6EIS, Iridium power :) though I thik Chris perfect sells a different heat rating for the V8, I'd have to check.

The popping could be unburned fuel in the exhaust or backfiring, possibly running lean or a fouled up plug.  V8s don't like to idle for long periods.

Check what plugs are in there too.

Hay guys i changed the gaskets.. and guess what its still doing it... i really cant afford new spark plugs to find out that it aint the prob... i might try swaping the plugs on the left to the right and vic-vercer. and see if the poping swaps side.. If not whats to check next??

Decent NGK plugs and Magnecor leads are a good place to start;  Magnecor leads will cost you an arm and a leg, but they'll never give you any problems and I think they have a lifetime warranty anyway.  Plus they look rather good.  If you can bite the bullet and splash out on the plugs and leads you'll know you won't have any problems from them in the future.

Personally, the next thing I'd do is recondition the carbs.  You can do this yourself and it's not a major job;  in fact it's quite satisfying.  It will also give you a very good insight into how they work.  It may or may not solve your problem, but it'll certainly help set you on your way towards getting a well-running V8.  There's a great supplier who does all the seals and bits you need in a handy kit (with instructions) but I can't for the life of me remember their name.

There's outlay involved but remember how much you're saving with every extra mpg you can eke out!
