CS M 8.8? help please
« on: May 15, 2007, 17:42:07 »
Now I know nothing about nuts and bolts. A friend of mine is a source for bolts with he also knows nothing about them. anyway they have marked on the bolt these symbols

"CS" "M" and "8.8"

I'm pretty sure the "8.8" refers to the bolt being of grade 8 strength, the "CS" i assume is for Carbon Steel, and the "M" is for the thread thickness.

Is this correct, and are they any good as a replacement for all the 11mm nuts and bolts on the landie (series 3)?

I would be surprised if there were any 11mm nuts and bolts on a series 3. Surely they are all imperial? I assume you are refering to the spanner size? In which case, you should be using 7/16 A/F if they are UN fasteners although many of them might be BS in which case you need BS/Whitworth spanners.

You are correct about the 8.8. This is the grade. Not sure about the others references.

Still shouldn't be putting an 11mm on them. There is no "metric equivalent" of any imperial size, there is simply the right spanner and the one that will end up rounding the head off.

the imperial equivilant I have didn't fit. there not standard nuts and bolts, I think one of the last owners changed them, they are size 11 heads. These bolts my mate uses are size 12. will be dunking one of them into a bucket of water and see what happens to it over night, if it begins to rust I may not use them.

It is fair to say that all sorts of fixings find their way on to old Land Rovers! Let's face it, the early 110 and 90's left the factory with a variety of metric and imperial fasteners

The other references on the bolt heads is likely to just refer to manufacturer and not anything to do with material.
