discovery 1 200 tdi turbo
« on: May 16, 2007, 19:16:16 »
help car been in garage for two weeks mechanic still cant fix. turbo works because when top intercooler pipe taken off air was rushing through and can hear turbo working.there is no power at all cant even get up hill. waste gate is not jammed because it moves freely. bottom turbo hose been changed. mechanic said hoses were spongy but after 2 weeks he says "dont know i cant figure out why". cv joint broke so i drove home on diff lock changed cv and since then no power dont know if this is coneccted. i live in portsmouth am willing to pay somebody who knows their landys as costing me a fortune through a garage that finds every fault but the right one. slindon on the 27th and i let my son down for his birthday last time so really want to get it sorted so i can keep promise this time  :(  ideally need a decent mechanic locally for ongoing work and ongoing and ongoing and well need i say more

:?:

Does the engine run and freely rev up :?:

Have you placed it on axle stands to see if all wheels turn correctly :?:

From the answers, there could be more questions.......

I have found his number in my phone by fluke.  His work number is 01489799399 and his name is Jez.

I get my car back tomorrow so can tell you his exact location but I do it is near Hedge End.

Tell him you heard of him from me James butler, son of the late John Butler and if he doesnt remember me then say used to be Silvana Minto's partner. He will remember her due to wierd name!

Absolute top bloke that I cant rate highly enough. Best Landy guy in the south of the country. He knows his stuff.

Let me know how you get on.

could it be a normal tdi engine? My disco drops down the gears like they are falling out the bottom when going up hills too especially when towing it is even faster to slow down and crawl!!!

It's all very well to know that the turbo is working, but if there's a hole in the intercooler for example, it won't hold boost....... hence really slow.....

Just a thought!!
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

Only two things will stop a diesel, lack of air or lack of fuel.
Take the pipe of the plenum chamber, thats the bit the top of the dip stick is attached to.
Rev the engine up to 3000rpm,  if it revs freely you shouldnt be able to block off the pipe going to the to  the plenum chamber from the intercooler, if you can keep you hand over the pipe (intercooler side)then turbo is proberly stuffed
If it wont reach 3000 rpm you proberly have a lack of fuel, the main culprits are either the fuel lift pump or a hole in the fuel line where the two fuel lines come out of the top of the fuel tank.
Pull the boot carpet up and you will see a round cover on the floor plate, the fuel line are underneath.

Sorry if its a bit of a ramble.

what tyres you got ?
does it pull up the gears fine then just loose its guts on hills ?

sounds like booste pressure to me if its suffering on hills

have you actualy checked to see what the turbo is producing ? or just see if it blows
as a completely shot turbo will stil blow agood draft when the top intercooler pipes removed, until it comes under load up a hill then it cant preduce

have you tried it with the exhaust off to eliminate any form of restriction in the exhaust system ?

if it was a leaking fuel pipe, when engine is turned off and left over night
it would be a royal PITA to start  in the morning and would run lumpy as hell until the air went out of the system
you would also be getting a slight miss fire depending on how bad the pipes were gone

if its fine on flat but when you hit a incline it makes me thin restriction in zaust ( so chocking the engine...acting like a engine break on trucks )

no boost pressure

or gearing

First thing I would do is bin the garage and not pay the bill.

Stick a boost gauge on and find out what the boost really is. Any garage worth their salt would have done that by now. Make tappings before and after the intercooler if necessary.

As has been said it's air or fuel end of story. With the right kit it's very easy to find.

Oh dear not good.

I didnt realise it was that bad a disco when you first mentioned it. I just thought it was a small teething trouble you had with the disco. Dint know it had a whole list of past major things going wrong!

When I took a series 3 to Jez he looked at it and said to me "just sell it as you will be spending more than it is worth mending it"

This sounds very familiar to something that I had on mine a year ago. It me stumped. I knew it wasn't intercooler, pipes or turbo.
It turned out to be the simplest of things, namely crud in the fuel line. It was fine on tickover, but as soon as it was put under load, the revs dropped away to nothing.
I had the lines blown through at a diesel specialist in Portsmouth and it has been fine since.
I put it down to poor quality from fuel at Morrisons, as I had filled up there and it happened two days after that.
I'd get that checked.
Good luck, and don't give up on the Beasty yet. I have one the same as yours and it goes like a dream, apart from when it gets fed cruddy fuel

you cant simulate boost loads when not driving the landy, yes the turbo will blow abit, but it wont be on boost so you think its ok when really it might not even be producing the 0,8 bar that it should be doing at full throttle up hill in 3rd or 4th
