squeeeky brakes

I know land rovers do have them, my brakes are squeeking like mad when i depress the pedal, whats the best cure?

1- pads worn to metal
2- stone inbetween pads and disc or caliper and disc or backing plate and disc
3- tiny vibrations the sound like squeels are caused by the pad vibrating in the caliper.

There not new are they??
If not then they may be rusty and lipped, try cleaning and regreasing them!

On two pot calliper brake disc you need a metal (0.5mm alloy) plate that goes between piston and pad (takes out vibration apparently). Usually rear only on Land-Rovers(discs all round)

Try swapping the pads side to side on the vehicle. Squealing is often caused by uneven wear of the pads. By swapping the pads roundyou reverse the wear problem. This is what those small anti squeal shims do, they wedge up only half of the pad to make that bit touch first. A bit like setting up push bike brakes so the trailing edge touches first pulling the rest of the pad on, where if the leading edge touches first it drags itself along the rim or disk forcing the rest of the pad off, the repeated grabbing/dragging and release it what is squealing.

Off course some combinations of pad compound and rotor are just noisy, but usually thats a kind of grinding/rumble not a squeal.

they are only a couple of months old at the very most, i will have a look at the weekend.

Put new pads in of a different make. Brake people have tried for more years than I remember to try to stop brake linings/pads squeeling.
Some tank tape on the back of the pad can help.

It could be mice. There could be mice stuck behind the wheels, and when you depress the brake pedal, they might be getting pinched in between the pads and screaming out in pain.

Just a thought.
