the Auto box oil dipstick tube has snapped about half way down the engine bay on my disco, just above the point at which it bolts to the body?

I saw a post on here the other day. The thread was about the dip stick popping out the top and they used wire to hold it in and then the dip stick tube broke. I think they said it cost about £150 to replace.

Wont gaffa tape or cable ties fix it?

I may have the price wrong but I think that was what they said. Im sure getting someone to weld it together will work!

How about shortening the dip stick?

Now i was wondering about that too, could be the easiest option, just wanted to keep at its original height if possible, as i presume its the breather too, and its bound to just dip into some water at some point

If you go to this thread http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=43276 and look at the blow up thing a me wotsit it shows that it isnt the breather pipe. Prob a good idea to keep it above water line anyway!!!

Yeah, that was me that happened to.  That 150 price was including the shipping to Japan from the UK, and having the garage do the install.

Before I shelled out that money, I went out and bought some hose and jubilee clips (or ring clamps, if you prefer) hoping to fit a bodge with some silicone sealant and a self-fabricated bracket to hold the top half of the tube to the firewall.

After opening the bonnet, getting my head and hands in there, I realized that thanks to the location of the original bracket, this wasn't going to work.  No easy way to slip the hose over the lower, remaining half.

Then I too though about just snipping the dipstick shorter, but this was going to have been a bad idea because a) the head/top plug of the dipstick is too wide to fit up against the firewall (though I suppose you could trim it), and b) the dipstick does tend to pop loose now and then, and IF that happened while I was anywhere near water, bad things could happen.

Anyway, the new one is nice in that the dipstick seems to like staying put much more now.

FYI, if you are able to track down a used one, keep in mind that the Tdi one and the V8 one are quite different.
