Discovery oils and fluids??

Hi All!

Quick questiion, will be changing the axle oil and the transfer box oil soon, but what type do I need, and how much?

I use ep90 in my series, but what about the Discovery? It's a 1997 300tdi auto.

The engine and the main auto box have been done, just axels and transfer box. I intend to also use one shot grease in the swivels.....

stick with the ep 90. Or some 80/90 will be fine.

Oh right ok, I somehow thought they would somehow use something else. Any one any ideas of quantity's? I haven't got a Haynes as yet.....?

Little tip for filling the transfer and gearbox:
Get one of these syphon pumps from Draper Tools.
They are cheap and make it a lot easier than trying to do it with a 500ml bottle.  :wink:

That pump is a syphon pump they only work if the full container is higher than the empty one. you'd be better getting a drill operated pump especially if completely refilling. the box.

They work just fine and will pull EP90 into a transfer box with the 5ltr can on the floor. I know this cos' that's how I do my own gearbox & transfer box refills.  :wink:
Agreed, the drill operated pump would be easier if you have one but for the price the syphon pump makes an easy option.

While were talkin fluids, a mate told me to use ATF in my manual disco gearbox. Anyone heard of this?

Land Rover recommend MTF-94 for the LT77 and R380 manual gearboxes now. But ATF is also fine, that's what they used to put in there.  :wink:

I have had MTF 94 on my shelf for about 6 months as i wont use it in my 300tdi.

I bought it from keith gotts however webbers landrover in basingstoke have told me not to use mtf94 and to stick with ATF.

What do you think??

Is the box in the td5 the same as the R380?

We routinely put MTF in the WOLF Fleet and have had no more problems with boxes then we normally have - i.e. NONE!  Mind you, that makes a o% change over when we used ATF, so what can you conclude from that?......................

I've been running MTF in my R380 for about 4 years with no problems.
TBH I don't think it really matters whether you use MTF or ATF in them but Land Rover now say to use MTF so I'll go with the manufactures recommendation.  :D

Budgie, as far as i am aware Landrover do not say to use MTF94 in the 300tdi's.

I spoke to webbers landrover in basingstoke and they said to stick to ATF and that MTF94 should only be used in later TD5's and freelandersa etc.

I had a quick search and, although I can't find anything from Land Rover ATM I did find that Ashcrofts recommend using MTF in the R380 but ATF in the LT77.
I'll have a better look after the Grand Prix.  :wink:

There's a LR tech bulitin about that says to change to MTF for the 300 - thats the info the MoD changed the policy for WOLF on other wise it would have stayed the same - we always do what the manufacturer says, so they said change to MTF for the 300 and we did................

In fact, thinking about it, it on LRA, hang on, I'll go find it.......

PROBLEM:
GEARBOX OIL - CHANGE TO SPECIFICATION

CAUSE:
At the following VINs, the original oil fill specification for the R380 gearbox was
changed to Texaco MTF94 high performance oil:
Range Rover - WA 384300
Discovery - WA 752315
Defender - WA 131138
New Discovery - All vehicles
The Freelander PG1 gearbox has used the new oil since introduction of the model.

ACTION:
MTF94 will be recognised by its orange/honey colour as opposed to the red
Dexron II oil previously used, and is now available from Land Rover Parts.
It is now the only oil which should be used for topping up and complete fill on
R380/PG1 gearbox applications.
The new oil is compatible with the old and to enable earlier vehicles to benefit from
its introduction, should be used retrospectively on vehicles prior to the above VINs
for all top up and refill requirements.
Refer to PARTS INFORMATIONoverleaf for details.
Until further notice, current Service Schedule gearbox oil change periods are
retained and must be adhered to.
 

And there you have it - R380 (as fitted to 300TDi's) - MTF..............

I have had MTF 94 sitting on the shelf for over 6 months and it was not even cheap!

Will get aroundf to doing that.
