Disco 200Tdi into my 1984 110
« on: May 22, 2007, 17:22:33 »
Hi All. Im buying a very cheap 200tdi disco. It has an lt77 box too, but i have promised it to my mate. I have an lt77 box already in the beast.

How much work is it to get the 200tdi in my 110. And will it mate up to my 110's lt77 ok. Its also an escuse to do the clutch whilst im there.

I beleive there are some issues with the turbo. Bu how do you get round this?

Thanks Wayne.

i have a LT77 box in my 1984 90 along with a 200tdi disco engine

now my gearbox has just expired  :(   i had a chat with a trans specialists this afternoon and they said that cos my LT77 is an early one it wouldn't be able to cope with the 200tdi so i'm going to need the "Newer" LT77

they said fitting the 200tdi to my early LT77 was probably a contributing factor in my gearbox failing  :(

hope this helps, unless anyone's got any more input  ( i do hope so i'd like to know more too )

After what sort of mileage did it fail? Is yours a disco 200tdi. If so did you fit it yourself?

yes it's a disco 200tdi

no i didn't fit it ( and i find reasons every day that kick me for not doing so )

the 200tdi's been in since january and i suppose i've done a good few thousand miles, though to be fair my gearbox wasn't in tiptop condition b4 the tdi went in so the extra oomph might have been the final straw  :?

Cheers Stefan. Thats very useful. Did you have to change the engine mounts. Or did the originals fit?

I used the original mounts from my 2.5 petrol, should be the same for the NA and turbo diesel too.

Ive just finished this conversion, use the flywheel cover off the 2.5TD engine and all the studs will align with the gear box, the turbo exhaust needs attention as there isnt one that will fit. Check out this,
http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=2394  its what I used and it was really helpful, though it is a pain in the a**e to do!!b If you need any advice PM me.

I must say the same I fit a disco 200tdi into my B Reg 90. I found it was very under geared.....  I am doing a swap with a discovery transfer which ppl say is a bad move but how can it be.... It throws a discovery about so why not a 90.....  Its the transfer box which is the gearing so just keep that in mind if you find it to low geared. BTW its a top conversion.... No more down the gears to get up them big hills..... I also have had mine in a year now and in the first 6 months I was noticing alot of play on the layshaft & Gear...... I have a post up somewhere about my build with some photos....... Will have a look for ya..... BRB

its a heck of a lot of hassle to swap backplates, instead just remove the locating dowls and remove IIRC the bottom 3 studs, drill out and tap the existing holes that are next to them and it slots in a treat. biggest problem i found was the pipework that i am still not 100% happy with even after moving the turbo.
if you you can make it i can break it.

There's no real hassle in replacing the flywheel housing. Just remove the flywheel and undo the 6 bolts that holds the housing to the engine block and remove it. It would be wise to replace the crank rear seal while doing this conversion so you would be removing the flywheel anyway. I guess it comes down to whether or not you think that removing studs, drilling, tapping, and getting the bolts is easier than changing the housing.

Well. Thsnks guys. In the end, the engine i was meant to be getting turned out to be a really bad smoker. It put me off, considering the 2.5 nad i have isnt. Never mind. Ill keep my eye out for another one.

Was it a bad smoker due to the pump being turned up for more power....?
