Worlds Ugliest car?
« on: May 30, 2007, 21:19:00 »
Saw my first one of these this morning, my god! its ugly!

Volvo C30

I mean the volvo 480 was bad but...

Datalas reckons however that this is the winner of the award...

So what do we think?
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

The Scorpio really takes the biscuit.  You can't imagine what the designers were thinking of.  IIRC the previous model outsold the Omega;  after the "facelift" the Omega outsold the new model 5 to 1.  I find the whole thing staggering.  I'd have loved to have been in the board meeting when they finally decided to shoot it in the head.

However...

I can't get the Scorpio out of my head now.  It's giving me nightmares.  I remember a TV programme a few years ago where they found some middle aged executive and followed him around as he bought a second hand car.  The guy decided to go for a Scorpio.  I sat there, mouth wide open, shaking my head in disbelief.  IT'S... A... FORD... SCORPIO!  The seller must have been hysterical with laughter.

That takes the biscuit I reckon..... he must be mad wasting so many years restoring it...

IMHO the Scorpio was a brave first attempt at what a lot of cars look like now... someone was either brave or high enough up the ladder that nobody dare tell him it was so ugly.

It might even have been designed as a safety measure to scare old ladies and little kids off the road.

Driving it was the same as the Granada, like sat in an armchair ! The driver doesn't see the front anyway...

Agree that it's ugly on the outside.... but you know what... it's fantastic on the inside!  8)  Me and she had one on hire for a week (co-incidence rather than choice I hasten to add!) and the space is great, driving layout, gadgets and flexibility for passangers is great. You can even have yer "burd" sitting next to you while yer cruisin the strip    like a 50's yank tank!

Did you know that the name "x5" came after the bit of maths they did on the freelander price list for it :D

I quite like the Omega & it's on the 'Regret Never Buying One' list.
We almost got a 2.5Tdi CDX(?) estate before I bought the Discovery instead.

I had an Omega too, with the BMW 6-cylinder diesel from the early P38.  It had an "S" button on the auto gearshift.  The "S" stood for "Smoke" - if you pressed the S button and booted the throttle, the car behind would disappear in a huge cloud of black smoke...

That's the one!
We were looking at a manual though, sadly the maximum towing limit was getting on for the laden weight of our BWSOW at the time ('89 Swift Challenger 520/5TA)
I don't think the Omega would have (legally at least?) coped with the Crusader we bought next (1600KG MTPLW)

The Jeep comander makes me think LR did a good job on the Disco3.  A random person that lives on my faverate way out of sheffield apears to have bought a comander recently (eather that or its been abandoned Richard Hammond style [pink micria CC] and no ones wanted to steel it yet), I think I'm going to find a new route to avoid the trormer of eye contact.

As for the 2 options above, its the ford - the volvo's not a great looker (though never seen one in the flesh) but has styleing.  The scorpio however uses bland american styleing and manages to achive uglyness instead of invisable blandness.  Having said that its still not as bad as most korean cars.   Sanyoung (or however they are ment to be spelt) have to have make most of the worst designs though, I need counseling after seeing one of their cars on the road, luckally it seems few have so little taste as to actully buy one.
