Not sure what it is but at the front end of the sump (underneath), Directly above the front axle is a little round hole about 2cm dia. Inside this hole is a wire mesh filter type looking thing not that i could get it out. There is a constant drip from this hole, any ideas? i guess its a breather but my haynes manual aint turned up yet.

Er, what age and engine?  What is leaking out, oil or water?

That is the timing cover drain. You normally put a bung in it whan you go wading in water or mud. Whatever it is, if its more than a drip a day, id have the cover off. I could be te front crankshaft seal. This means there is oil getting on your timing belt. Not a good thing to have happening. Could lead to premature failure. For the cost of the job it will give you peace of mind.

Its a 2.5 n/a.
  I don't think its that much of a job to undertake is it? just remove and replace the seal on that shaft? May do it myself. i can normally do work that has 3 spanners in the haynes manual. but haven't got mine for this landy yet.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago. It isnt a major job. The belt and waterpump and timing cover gaskets were less than £20. Took about a day to do, that includes cleaning everything up really nicely. Just be careful undoing the timing cover bolts. They can easily shear.
