i think we have it sussed thanks mate....... the winch had stopped winching in and out. it wouldnt spool in either direction.. you would press the button on the remote and it would just click. after talking with a few peeps who know what they are looking at we have discovered its the solinoids that are at fault......

so now its time to find a albright ....

a click in both directions ?
both sets of solenoids dont fail together, usauly the power in ones go,
sounds to me like either the motor has died, got water in or you have got a poor earth to the solenoids themselves

have you got the winch motor earthed direct to the battery, not through chassis,
also you need a negative wire from the negative lead that should go to the motor linking upto the solenoid pack to grond them out aswel

i doubt its the solenoids at fault as for the reason above

hi mate.....yeah its in both directions..... i do have an earth from solinoids to motor and then up to neg on battery.

this afternoon i was getting a click in both directions.....i tapped the top of the solinoids eventully it spooled......but when i took my finger off the button it stopped and wouldnt start again...just click.... it was the same in both diections....

i did this a couple of times before it stopped completly.....ie it now just clicks..... and wont spool no matter how i tap the solinoids.... :(  :(

the motor was quite clean inside..... here are a few pics

thsi was after taking it apart to have look. i sprayed electrical cleaner all over the brushes....but to be honest they were spotles

its a double reduction pack
what are the connections like on the buzz bars as they are very fussy if they dont get a good contact
but, to be honest, throw them away and fit a contactor instead
altho contacters arnt bombproof, i welded mine together with my 8274

if you tapped a solenoid then it worked then i must be 2 solenoids died, buts its very strange that both ways have gone, expecialy with it being double reducion, they usualy preddy damn good and can take a good 10 min continuous winch session with ease  :?

it deffo isnt the motor looking at that, were all the brush's worn even ?
no blacking on the armeture or cummutator ?

a double what      you lost me at the double bit . all the connections look very clean to be honest. i had a few of them apart to make sure. there was a small amount of dirt that had gotten into the sealed area but to be honest i would say it was very clean in the considering how much its been dunked.

the brushes all seemed clean and in good condition. they all seemed even. although one of the leads to one of the brushes was a little darker than the others....but seemed in good condition.

i have been racking my brain as to why it stopped working and when. i think i have remembered the last time i used it was a pretty hard recovery of a stricken 90. it too 3 winches pulling at once to free him. mine got quite hot   ....... but it was a case of do or die as the play site was closing, myself and 2 other marshals had to get the poor bloke out.

maybe this is what has caused the problems. i wouldnt say i overloaded it but it did work hard.

so do i get the albrights and then see if it works ok?

i dont really know the ins and outs of a winch   im learning on the run , as today was the first time ive taken one apart
cheers

this maybe a silly question ......but here goes.

i have been reading about winches for what seems like days now....the message i am getting is " if you suspect your solinoids are knackered you should check the operation of the motor "

now all the tests i have read have told you to connect certain wires to make the motor work.....but all these tests have been done on warn winches and as such say things like ..." connect F2 to F1 "

if i take a picture of my solinoids complete with wires in would anyone be able to tell me which colour wires to connect to check the motor ?

any help would be brilliant. things are a little tight here at the moment so could do without buying an albright if not really needed and the problem is somewhere else
cheers

(at Den speed     )

on the motor the three terminals make a triangle

two terminals close together - one on it's own

if you connect the single terminal on the motor (the one at the top of the triangle) to one of the pair

then put your + feed to the other one of the pair the motor should work if it's ok

<Edit>

PS the albright is cheaper than a motor

ps...wrong
ill tell you the right way if you wish

so have you braught 1 albright or 2  :?  as you only need the one

what still miffs me is the fact that both in and out have died...when really only the in solenoids should be fried  :?

just try it with the albright and see how it goes, but contactors or pretty bombproof....ok i have welded one together but it was 6months old and had seen some battle    and water
