BF Goodrich tyre question

I know this is going to be a simple question for you in the know but I'll be ringing up the garage tomorrow to see about getting a nice new set of BF Goodrich A/T fitted as my current rubber has nearly had it. I want to know if they all come with the white writing on the side or do you have to ask for something special. Only reason I'm asking is I saw a Disco in my local supermarket car park this afternoon and his tyres were completly black.

I've done all the normal searches on here and on the BF website and have come up blank.

They come as standard with the white lettering on one side, black on the other just let the tyre fitter know what you want - white or black and he'll just put them on which ever way round you ask for.  Simple.  (the job I mean, not you!)

Mark, Just a word of warning so that you don't get worried, my BFG's came with Blue lettering and needed a bit of elbow grease and a scrubbing brush to get them White. :?

Or, if you're lazy, drive for a few hundred miles and the blue will rub off on its own...

Nothing to do with advertising but the white looks tacky especially when worn. Keep the tyres muddy!

Mmm...just ordered three of these BFG AT's (£102 each), to be fitted on Tuesday, sticking to standard 235/70 though.

Rotated the older 235/70 Maxxis cos the shoulders were wearing thin on the front, but that only works for a few weeks, one of the rears has about 4mm in the 75% area of the tyre that's important, but there has to be visible tread on the rest, and the shoulders are almost shot.

These Maxxis were cheap (£61 each) and have lots of grip on the road, but they wear so quick it's a joke.  It's not tyre pressures either, 26 front, 34 rear, checked every week, never more than 1 psi different.

Anyway, having three because the spare is a 205 x 16, didn't realise that this made it illegal, but apparently this is correct so I'm replacing it.

There's some wear left in the front Maxxis, so I'll buy another pair of BFG's in a few weeks.

Expensive last few months, Lambda Sensors, core plugs, exhaust, radiator, viscous coupling, new vapouriser (LPG), insurance renewal, and now tyres (again).

I know someone that says they had a set of these BFG's last 50k, don't know whether there's any truth in that, but I've tried Goodyear 25k, and Maxxis 20k, there's nowt wrong with tracking, and I don't race about on LPG.

Also, 6k tyre rotation, helps even out the wear over a set of boots, but what does everyone think?

As I release the moths from my wallet, I'm wondering about these things.

Yeah, mine have 40K and they're not even half worn.  That includes desert driving which pretty much strips off the rubber while you watch.  They'll be good for considerably more than 60K.

Will be having mine fitted for £95 each, which includes the £1.50 disposal cost of the old tyre...!!

Just about to replace two of my BFG ATs and they have just past 75k so well worth the money.
I'm about to go over to BFG MTs so hoppe they last as long!!!

M/ts dont last as long but they dont last badly. They are also well mannered on the road.

I spotted you run 26psi up front and 34 back?

Do you find that a little soft? I've run at 32 on front and 38-40 on rears depending on load for about 2 years now with no adverse affects.
In fact, fuel consumption is good, steering is relatively light and positive and tyre wear is even all over.

It's also got plenty of gip off road. (BFG AT 245/70/16)

For  a 1996 V8 3.9 Discovery, Land Rover state 28 front 38 rear for 205 x 16, and 26 front 34 rear for 235/70 x 16.

Over-inflated tyres will be lighter on the steering, and fuel consumption will be lower, this is because you're driving on the centre of the tyre.  Having stated that, I do believe that 26 front and 34 rear is under-pressure.

Shoulder wear from steering is a problem with front tyres on a Discovery 300 Series V8 or TDi (particularly near side), but I feel that the problem is due to Land Rover supplied recommended pressures being too low.

I realise the Discovery is a heavy vehicle, but I just don't race about anywhere, have driven all sorts of vehicles from emergency fast response cars to Heavy Goods, and I've only ever seen this type of wear from excessive high speed cornering.

If anyone has got 50k out of a pair of BFG AT's on the front wheels of a 300 Series V8, using standard 235/70 tyres, I'd be very interested to find out what pressures you've been using.

32psi front may very well be the optimum, but there's enough of us, can we gather some evidence?

Wireless, I would be very careful running 2 BFG ATs rather than 4.  I did that once in my 95 3000tdi Disco and it handled like a bag of <edit> (more so than normal I mean!)  BFG state that you should only ever fit 4 at once for this reason...

Great tyre, don't get me wrong.  As many have already said, they are the best.

Best to be safe though.  Funnily enough, I am about the buy a new set of boots too.  Can't choose between BFG AT and General Grabber AT2 though. Or indeed whether to sneek up a size from 235/70/16 to 245/75/16 for a spot more clearence...

The Maxxis will only be on the front for a few weeks at most, but I know what you're saying, I'll be careful, I wouldn't normally mix tyre types between axles, but it's not illegal, all are radial.

BTW, what tyre sizes and pressures do you run front and back?

Im running AT2's, they worked out a little cheaper than the bfg's
road manners are great, and I have found them good off road as well. If I had to replace them I would get the same again.
Im running on Landrovers recomended pressures, but personaly think the rears are to soft.
Will experiment a lttle in time !

I'm running BFG Land terrains, (cos I'm a cheap-skate), on WOLF rims, (Black naturally as they are cooler like that), at 32 Psi front and 34 Psi rear, with a 1.5" lift and ARBs still on.

Ive had about 750 miles out of a set of 5 so far and the moulding bobbles have only just gone on the tread area - in fact you can still see the bases of them - well mannered on and off road only annoying thing is a slight vibration at around 35-40 Mph that appeared on the drive away from having them fitted and wasn't there on the drive there.......

I've gone up a size to 245/75/R16 and the taller side walls have altered the gearing slightly, enough to make a noticeable difference up steep hills, other than that I'm well happy....

Oh and it's white lettering out for me.
