Changing Torque converter

I think the TC has gone on my Disco, lots of wirrrrr linked to revs and then drive went. Cooled for a while and limped 1 mile home :cry:

So, my dipstick tube is snapped and I think all the fluid has beed spat out, what's the chance of filling up and being alright?

How much 'fun' is it to replace the TC, or just do the lot?

UPDATE

Just a poorly tensioned cable! (phew!)

Revs is the fan (probably need a new viscouse(SP) jobby

It's worthwhile checking that there is enough fluid in there before you go removing the gearbox to replace the Torque Converter. It contains quite a percentage of the transmission oil, so it would be best to get another dipstick and check the level. If it's significantly lower there is a chance that something is damaged, but a couple of litres of ATF is a lot cheaper and easier than having to replace something that may still be fine.

Yup, put more fluid in, drove up the road and it started to slip, limped back again. £25 lighter for fluid and VERY edit off!

Change the whole lot or get a new TC?

Having been advised to replace the filter and spent a few hours getting drenched in ATF, the gearbox or TC (or both) is trashed. Does anyone know of one going. I'd like to get one from ashcrofts, but my pockets are not that deep right now :oops:

are you sure the converter is messing about and not the clutch packs inside? does the oil smell burnt?

Oil is a little dark (gone purple) does not smell, but there are bits in the fluid (not metal) so I think it's the TC, plus the first clutch pack. PITA whatever it is :cry:

UPDATE

All it was is the cable not sorted out, drives fine, the wirring is the cooling fan (probably needs a new one).
