Just let me point something out.

Mud-Club is free to its users.  Behind the scenes, all this hosting and bandwidth has to be paid for - and this is a high-bandwidth site.  This is done by the administrators.  It has to be maintained and kept secure.  This is also done by the admins, at considerable cost to their time and with no benefit to them.

So, the users (myself included) get something for nothing, whilst the people who set up and run the site spend a lot of money and time on it, and in return they get...  complaints.

Think about this for a moment.

Say you invite somebody around to your house one day, and you give them dinner.  At the end of the evening, they say, that's great, but the dessert was rubbish.  Next time you shouldn't serve that.  You should do it differently.  What would you think to that?

I'm not one of the people I'm referring to above;  I'm just a moderator.  If I were you though I'd think very carefully about how you look at this site.  Maybe one day the people behind it will think - stuff this - and pull the plug.

personally i think replies are better as you can always get help about the product from other people which also relieves the hassle of selling from the seller.

Just think it is also an easier way on tracking who wants it how many people are interested etc etc and if someone does hijack it or breaks the rules by bumping their thread everyday then as was said in the other thread give them  a few warnings and after that ban them from having the priveliage to sell.

thats my thought anyways :) :)

But either way at the end of the day its up to the admin as they said, they have to keep track of everything very often.

Ok how about charging a small sum towards the site for the priveliage of selling?

say 20p paid through paypal for each thread posted ?

Just an idea :)

While I can applaud the free to use stance adopted on here perhaps it's now a case of the admin being victims of their own success
Have they ever considered charging a small (whatever it costs to run the site  divided by the no. of members) fee ?
I don't reckon many would object

Thanks Simon - you obviouslt type faster than me !

i for one dont think this poll is at all helpful for the admin team

they do a thankless task on here anyway and we should all be grateful for the fact they give up their time to do it
if you need to discuss the item for sale then sign in and pm the seller its not rocket science is it

I back the admin team on this one

Regarding fees:

To do that - and to be fair - we would have to have ALL for sales submitted to the admin, vetted, replied to, and then paid for by paypal and then posted. You guys ok with that?????

i cant see a prob with that .

may take a few hours to get your thread posted, but it then relieves a bit of financial stress off the admin team who have put in all the hard wokk so far into this great site :)

But obviously im not gonna jump in and say its a good idea till everyone has read whats going on and gives thier suggestions :)

Ok, so those of you who are agreeing with what Thrasher said are failing to remember that it would make the admins job even more difficult as they would have to spend the time vetting and posting the for sale ad themselves!

Personally i like the idea of replies on threads, but also maybe appointing 1 or 2 mods who's only responbility is that board so it can be kept in order and thus not causing any confusion for users as to which mod did what?

One of the reasons i say this is the problems with the PM system where people arent getting messages people send them, so possibly losing out on the first dibs policy!

As said previously, this is the best forum on the net as its the only that doesnt get clicky and resent outsiders.  We obviously respect those who are running this system, but maybe a yearly membership could be charged? i dont know how much it would work at but if its only a couple of quid a year surely its worth it?

...it won't only be a few hours. Only the admins would be able to do it. And I'm afraid it might be 2 minutes, it might be a week - they aren't employed by mud-club. They created it. There is a difference :)

A yearly charge would be against the foundations of the club. When people pay they EXPECT things - i.e. instant responses, instant for sale posts, a COMMITEE...the list goes on

This club was formed BECAUSE these things annoyed us.......

Well, I think it needed pointing out, because some people have evidently lost sight of this.  I'm speaking as a user;  I'm not an administrator so I wasn't referring to myself in any way.

Those points are fair enough, as a user who came in only just over a year ago i dont know about how/why the club was formed.  Just trying to offer a suggestion out there instead of just moaning about it all :D

I never said about annoying people, as obviously you cant please everyone, but look at the ammount of time some people spend on here, including me, during the day and evening, there are a few of us that would volunteer to this to help make things easier for everyone and to make people happy :D

Badgers wasn't saying anyone was annoying people. However mod/admin decisions are seen as annoyances by users judging by the posts/polls we seem to start. You MUST remember this if you wish to become a mod for an area. It's thankless  :?

i've voted for replies allowed, basically because its a bit irritating not being able to.

i dont really agree with the whole yearly membership thing, not because im a stingey git but because it says "www.mud-club.com - A Free Internet based 4x4 Club" at the top of the page... so that wouldnt really work.

however, it would be a more sensible idea if there was a "donate" button, aka LRUK and others. all i would say about that is DONT give the members that donate a special title or image below their username, etc... it would just invite elitism.

something i've always found good about mud club is that it doesnt display your age, and doesnt display your post count. the reason behind me saying that is because age and post count are usually what make certain members feel special (or make certain members an easy target for the previous members).

LOL at this thread........

A few years ago now there was a forum called Funkysmart.co.uk, I was a moderator and this type of "thread" was common place, Funkysmart was free, an excellent site, admin'd and modded by volunteers and enthusiasts.

One day in the admin pulled the plug.... was more trouble than it was worth..... admin and mods were successfull outside the forum, did it as a hobby.... then t just stopped being fun!

Hats off to Admin(s) & Mods.....

Its YOUR site.....

Run it how YOU want! We have a choice!

Oh and I voted to keep it as it is now.
