Help please computer dinosaur
« on: June 11, 2007, 13:02:08 »
I have a windows xp computer which is becoming slow and also freezing. The mouse arrow moves but doesn't click the bits it should so I have to reboot or switch on and off.

I have CCleaner installed and AVG. The CCleaner asked if I wanted to update and run new FREE version which I did it told me I had hundreds of faults and would fix only 9 unless I purchased the whole thing.

Is this a scam or should I part with the $29.99 dollars and let it sort things.

AVG scan shows nothing is wrong. I have also defragmented and nothing seems to have improved.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Uninstal the cleaner you have, I have heard of them deliberately slowing PCs down when the license runs out so as to get you to renew.

Then try down loading "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner" from http://www.download.com

A large number of these 'spyware cleaners' are scams that put a lot of stuff on and report non faults.

Use Spybot S&D AND Ad-Aware SE between the two they will fix just about everything.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Spybot is free :)

Ad-Aware SE is free but you have to pay for the full version, not something you really need to do.

For what its worth theres always the free Windows Defneder, but its not that good.

Right folks thanks for the tips Ad ware installed and computer scanned.

Found 268 issues now question 1 Do I ask it to quarantine?
2 Do I ask it to restore system?
3 Do I  ask it to remove?
4 Do I ask it to ignore?

Also I checked the AVG vault which has about the same number of items do I ask it to delete remove etc. If released from quarantine surely the problems will just come back how do you dump the trogans or whatever.

Do I leave em locked up forever inthe vautl.

Thanks Standing by H1

Stuff in the AVG vault isnt a problem,. check what it actually is, if its a file you need keep it in the fault, else bin it.

You should be able to tell ad-aware and Spybot to fix the issues BUT if anything you use relys on the Spyware (Kazaa, Limewire) it will stop working. Best find another tool to do the job in that case.

Ok folks I put them in the quarantine section for now I'd like to dump them rather than having them on the system.

Like I say I am computer illiterate.

Thanks JB

eusing is a registry scan and cleaner, perked my machine up no end. Free to download and use unlike most of the others which will scan your system, report 400+ problems and then only fix 20 of them that weren't effecting system performance anyway.
