my mates freelander 1.8 when he starts it the revs go up and down even if he trys to rev it up, when its warmed up its fine, any ideas

Hello,
Maybe the idle air control valve. on the K series this moves in and out during start-up to set the idle speed. Possibly its sticking or lost track of its 0 position.
Its one of the black pastic sensors that is located near the throttle, you can hear it whir on start up. Possibly get rover diagnostics on it or just replace it if you can get a chap one. I use
