A most bizarre event!
« on: June 13, 2007, 19:47:57 »
Last night, I went into a pub. Nothing bizarre in that, for those who know me, but what happened next left me speachless!
I noted that the pub served Leffe Belgian Beer on draught! Excellent, I thought, thats me sorted for the night!
So I approached the bar and asked the young barman for 'a pint of Leffe please'.
He looked bemused, and then said "I can only sell it in half pints"
"Why?"
"Er, because it is a strong beer and it is expensive"
"I know, I am well versed in the ways of Leffe"
"You might get drunk and get mental"
"I see your point, but trust me I won't. All I want is a pint of Leffe, so I can go and sit outside in the sunshine of this beautiful evening and relax"
"Er, I can sell you two half pints"
"Doesn't that then defeat the object?"
"I don't understand what you mean"
"You won't sell me a pint of Leffe in a pint glass, in case I drink it and go 'mental', but you will sell me two half pint glasses of Leffe, at the the same time"
"Yeah"
I was now trying to work out the logic of what I was hearing. Perhaps the young barman was:
 A) Concerned for my mental wellbeing. Too late.
 B) Concerned for the wellbeing of my wallet. Too late
 C) Concerned that I did not understand that Leffe was alledgedley not brewed by monks in Belguim, but was in fact made by Satan in his own Hellish brewery.
I eventually gave in and got two half pints, and asked, as a joke, that they be poured into a pint glass, which he then did!

What is going on? Am I now not allowed to make decision of my own about what I drink?
Before I start getting preached at, yes, I do know alcohol is bad for you, but please don't treat me like a child!
Has anyone else encountered such absurdity?

Use alcohol responsibly!

but out of pure intrest can i know which pub it was?

i can understand them saying after like 4/5 or what ever 'i'm sorry sir, i am refusing to serve you because your drunk'... or something along those lines.

we serve scrumpy cider @ 7.3 %! leffee is only 6.6!

i will agree with the expensive bit tho.

Perhaps they don't know what to charge for it by the pint? Maybe the brewery only gave them the price per half pint and they can't do the sums

I used to frequent a pub in my youth which sold Ye Olde Scrumpy, but any 'grockle' that wanted it was limited to 2 pints while the locals where allowed unlimited supplies.

Afraid you wouldn't have got two halves to pour into a pint glass either and would have got a very strong lecture from the landlady for trying that one on

i think its probly because if you add the price of two half pints togather it comes to more than the price of a pint, i work in a bar but would never do that!

Hi All

Maybe he only had a half button on his till   or he was just dim

as for the scrumpy I went in a pub in Hereford can't remember the name of it as I can't remember much at all .I bought the first pint for me and my mate then he got the second, the barman bought the third and a bloke we didn't know bought the forth to see what would happen as he had not seen anyone do 4 .I remember leaving the pub a bit wobbly crossing a bridge over a duel carrageway then waking up fully clothed face down at 3 pm the next day missed a whole day of work

went back to the pub and bought a gallon to take back to Manchester

Some pubs have crazy ideas.
A few years ago me and two mates went into a pub near the uni... we went into small room set aside from the Dr Who lookalikes in the large noisy student filled bar.
The convo went as follows :-

3 pints please
Sorry we don't serve pints in this room

errr 9 halves then please

9 ? ok

Anyone who drinks can down 3 halves in the time it takes to empty a pint down their neck, so why did they think it was more genteel to serve halves not pints? The price was the same btw.

As a pub manager myself, I was always wary of any strangers popping in and drinking halves... they are the heavy drinkers !
TD5 ... Disco Classic Country (Oz import)

What credit crunch ? I started with nothing and still have most of it left !

TDi90 - it's quite sweet - so don't expect a pint of fosters with kick ... it's also very lively (which I reckon is why they wimp out and do halves...)

Remember it's Belgian Beer :)

Leffe is one of the best beers in the world and personally I do not consider it expensive at all.

Beer is like advertising.

Is a £1,000,000 advert expensive?
Is a 10p advert expensive?

If you spend £1m on an advert and sell £1b worth of goods, then that was a cheap advert.  Conversly, if you spend 10p on an advert and sell nothing then that advert was expensive.

When you buy a pint of Leffe you get a real beer which has been crafted out of the finest ingredients and which has a deep flavour, good colour and a delightful smell.  It also has a good alchohol content.  It is a joy to smell, view, drink and savour.  One of the finest drinking experiences available.

Budweiser, Fosters, castlemane and many of the mass produced chemical brews are shallow by comparison.

Leffe expensive?  Not compared with what your money buys with the others on the market.

It was a pub in Kent, one of the Beefeater chain. But to carry out more research into the demonic world of Leffe, tomorrow I travel to France. I shall acquire more exotic examples and test them thoroughly. I shall report back!
On my last visit to France, I found a beer called Quack, 10% proof. Verrrry nice, and It certainly did make me quack!
Mind you, for the ultimate beer, drink Bush   12% and it is like Special Brew on steroids. Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry nice if drunk cold, the beer that is, not the person drinking it.
I shall go now and prepare for my cross channel trip. Tally Ho! Chocks away, back in time for tea and medals, hurrah!

When we used to run a bar the brewery company who supported us had a ruling on some very strong ales (talkin 14% here) and meads, that the were only allowed to be served in halfs ?? dont know why??

Leffe is weak by most belgian standards, go to the beer festaval, youll find some gorgeous ales and beers, some right up to 20%

drink responsibly
