Sliders fitted......
« on: June 18, 2007, 21:53:19 »
Finally got my Mill Services sliders fitted, they're still just plain galvanised at the mo, the truck is Bonatti Grey, I'm thinking that the sliders may look better painted black.........what do we think ?

Yeah I'm inclined to go the black route as they would look a bit more 'factory' and follow the line of the wheel arches better.

I'm still undecided - but veering towards black,

what's the best thing to paint on galv with, do you need special primer, or will hammerite go straight on ?

I also had in mind to stick some rubber on the top edge of the tree bar to act as a 'non-slip mat' type of thing......that would be black, so it looks like the sliders are going black too - but what would stick rubber to galvanised steel ?

Any good skate board shop, some sports shops have it too.

Or  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JESSUP-Premium-Skateboard-Griptape-Grip-Tape-32-x-9_W0QQitemZ260129841763QQihZ016QQcategoryZ47357QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Tons of the stuff, and dirt cheap.

As Fingers said skate or some sports shops. You can get it in different sizes& is really easy to fit just cut to size or shapes you fancy then peel the backing off & stick. Had to get some for my sons  board it was12" x 30" & cost &4.50 for the sheet . When it's covered in mud just give it a scrub with a brush :D Oh nearly forgot you can get it in nearly any colour you want  :D Pink would stand out & get you noticed              sorry could'nt help it

I've painted my galvanised Mill Services sliders using spray cans of satin black Plasticote (in fact the whole car is done in Plasticote :) )

The finish looks superb and has only ever rubbed off when the Side bars have been put to the test on rocks etc and even then its a 2 minute job to recoat where its rubbed as the plasticate matches in superbly

Cheers Steve

Ah yes, supposedly very easy.........but in reality.....read on !!!

First problem I found was that the front bulkhead to chassis outrigger bolt (M12 x long) was not quite long enough to bolt the front end of the slider on, the nut would go on, but ideally wanted another two full turns, and there was no way that would happen. I ended up buying some really long M12 bolts (proper spec etc) and using them - in fact, having the longer thread made the locating of the slider easier, as it was just me and a pair of axles stands doing the job !

Second problem - the supplied brackets just didn't line up with anything, it is possible that Richard @ Mill sent the wrong brackets I guess, but its a while since I got the sliders, and I know that he's not been well, so didn't think it fair to start moaning that things didnt' seem right.

Third problem - on a 110 SW, you get a third outriggger (supports the rear floor), but on a 110 HT, that third outrigger isn't there ! I looked around a couple of places to see if I could get the original LR part (it just bolts on), but the only ones I found were badly rusted and only fit for scrap (and the cheeky bloke wanted 40 notes for it   ). I got a length of 4"x2" steel box (6mm thick) from a local steelworkers (10 quid) and made my own outriggers - basically, the lump of 4x2 runs the full width of the vehicle, bolting onto the original mounts, and provides me with a solid fixing on each side (just in front of the rear wheels), to bolt the slider rear brackets too - it works a treat.

Back to problem number two. I've fabricated (from a length of 2" galv steel angle I 'found' at work, again its 6mm thick) a bracket that bolts onto the slider, and then runs down one side of the existing chassis outrigger. I've only done this bracket for the o/s as I ran out of steel cutting discs for the grinder, and my ears couldn't take the noise anymore (I can't wear ear defenders with my face shield)

Just need to decide on what paint (Hammerite or Plastikote), and get some of that 'board tape to act as an anti-slip and I'll be done.

I reckon so, as long as you can handle a spanner you should be ok - might need to resort to a bit of metalwork/fabrication if you need to make some brackets though.
