I have converted my garage loft space into a wee Den Of Tranquility complete with wood burning pot belly stove.
While painting the rafters in black bitumen tar paint to replicate a ye olde
Tudor style building I discovered that some are full of wood worm and i have wee beetles emerging all over the place any useful advice before my garage falls apart.

Isn't there some sort of stuff you can spray onto the beams that kills the little sods?

Get yourself to your local hardware store pronto... they'll sell you a large can of sprayable solution that will get rid of them. Do two sprays, one two weeks after the 1st. You should now be protected for the next 10yrs.
Burn any scrap wood laying about in the garage

Call a damp proof company; miost of them do woodworm spraying.
Yes it will cost more but:
A: they have the kit; long lances etc. to get into the corners without ripping stuff apart.
B; if you ever want to sell you have proof that it was done properly when the surveyor picks it up.
C; it's quite possibly very old and dealt with years ago; they would be able to advise you on it.

Cheers everyone.
I am waiting for £250s worth of chemical spray gear, some tins of gel, which is impregnated into the affected areas by syringe injection, a long lance with flexi end and enough chemical to do the entire garage and house belt and braces. There is no sign of anything in the house but as these beetles can fly I thought it would be worth doing everything.
The companies wouldn't touch the job when I mentioned the beams had been painted in bitumen tar paint. That's why I'm going for the injection DIY method. I will then inject Git rot into the holes. It's a resin used on boat hulls to fill and strengthen any rotten planking.

My parents used a sort of smoke bomb. Basically, you sort of airtighted the place (as far as reasonable), lit a couple of the [!Expletive Deleted!] and ran for your life. Couple of days later, all they needed to do was hoover the little critters off the floor. After they used it, it became a craze. Dunno if it is available in this country, but I'll try and find out.

Thanks mate been trying to get hold of them but have been told they only kill the ones which are flying /crawling around at the time.
I'll use anything so If you find out I'll give them a try.
Cheers H1

I now have a mental image of Highlander's garage being blown sky-high... no more woodworm!

My dad owns his own pest conrorl firm and he use's smoke bombs and fogging machince for all kinds of critters but i don't know if theres one for wood worms.
You have to be careful what you use where because some products can melt things.
Like the wasp nest distroyer that melts pvc windows.
I will ask him when i se him and post the findings on here .
