worked it out!!

eventually got round to taking the top of my gearbox selector off and having a poke and a prod.
 
 i found the reason why it wasnt going into reverse. the little plunger thingy that gives resistance between first and reverse was siesed solid. took it apart treated it to an angle grinder lots of wd-40 and even more greece and it works a corker!!! a little to easy to get in reverse now so i think i shall be buying a new one of them plungers.....

 also took it upon myself to check the tranfers box oil level...... and found some plonker had filled it with ATF!!!!!! so that came out and tractor back end oil went in (thickest we had in the workshop), i can actually hear the radio now at 65/70mph!!!!!

 slowly getting it sorted, still need to do the rear shocks and springs.

 and im hoping the welding fairy will take pity on me one night and weld the sills as they are slowly falling apart more........
dont be beat by something you cant eat!!

If you've got a Borg-Warner transfer box, it's supposed to have ATF in it.  This is according to the official Range Rover workshop manual.  The Haynes guide has a mistake in it

Transfer box is OK with EP oils, but nicer with Difflock Evolution, main box must have ATF, MT94 or even better Evolution as the oil pump in the box will strip as it can't cope with thick stuff. Transfer doesn't have a pump so can cope with most just takes time to get the stuff around.

Early RR box LT95 is recomended to have ordinary engine oil 20/50 or similar.

Personally I would put synthetic in every time in all cases.

how can i tell if it is a borg-warner conversion?
 with the thicker oil in it it is nice and quiet with the watery stuff that came out it was noisey as hell.
 the oil that came out was like water, ATF has a little substance to it this had none......

 i think i shall leave the tractor back-end oil in it for the time being, when it breaks i shall fix it, or just park it in a hedge........

f your transfer lever has no diff lock position (high/low only) then you have a borg warner.

And IIRC the Borg-Warner has an oil pump in it, though I ran mine on EP90 after reading the haynes book of confusion :roll:
