Glass Removal for Tinting

How easy is it to remove & re-install the glass in a Disco?
I want to tint my windows, but as the window rubbers round the fixed panes are cracked and perished I'm thinking it might be easiest to remove the glass, apply the tinting film and re-fit the windows. Two birds one stone & all that.

I want to tint the rear glass, alpines, the fixed panes & rear doors. It's got to be easier to apply the tint film with the glass out as well?

Are new rubbers a dealer only thing, and finally, any tips about what cord to use & whether the tool to insert the cord in the rubber is an essential, or just a makes things easier type tool.

Put a windscreen in our Chris's suzuki. We used the little hook shaped Draper tools (used for removing o rings) to pull the rubbers back into place after a session of string pulling.

Removal & re-fit of rear window is straight forward, you need someone to hold whilst you remove & re-fit. Its possible with a large flat blade screw driver.  Same goes for back windows, nice & easy.  I have removed the back windows on my first Disco with a set of house keys after locking them in the car!  :oops:   Rubbers are really soft, but do split easily!
No need to tint alpines, with rest tinted they will look tinted too.  They are a pain due to the shape, lots of pre-shrinking required.
If its a five door then trim the inside gasket of the small windows in the back doors, film will then lay deeper than can be seen from the outside. If its a three door then the back seat windows just unscrew.
No need to remove drop down windows, just lift out the large straight gasket at the bottom.  This allows you to drop the windows enough to butt up to the top & still get to the lower part easily.

Ive got a 3dr disco n i tinted my rear dr, boot side n roof glass, n the back seat glass. Looks the dogs nuts!!! Was so much easier taking the glass out, didnt even bother trying it in! my rubbers were only slightly cracked on the corners n a bit of black silicone solved that once put back in!

To get the glass out we used sash window cord. best thing for it! very tuff smooth n stiff. oh n its a 2 man job!

The boot door is about the hardest as there are so many corner and its the biggest piece of glass!

When u tint ur windows though dont tint right to the edge of the glass as when you r putting it back the rubber tends to flick the edge of the film so cut it about 3mm smaller round the edges!

You may also have to put up with the tint my disco n drug dealer jokes for a bit but they soon tier! :lol:
Go as dark as u want i have limo black on mine n it doesnt affect reversing 1 bit little bit harder at night though but dont let that put u off it worth it!

Try these guys http://www.autofastltd.co.uk/  I have heard a lot of good things about them, they use quality film, remove windows and will replace seals if required/supplied.

They have been used by a few people that have prepared vehicles for expidition use. They use a titanium based film and also have films that are completely smash proof and legal.

I will be paying them a visit at the end of July to have my windows professionally tinted, by the time you have bought the tint, [!Expletive Deleted!] around with window seals, cut your self, [!Expletive Deleted!] around trying to get bubbles out of the tint and lost a day, it would have been better to have let these guys do it.

my mate just got some tint from halfords or charlie browns for his camper van big tip lots and lots of soapy water and a soft rubber squeegy thing or roller its a long and time consuming task he cocked up a few times cos you stick the tint to the out side back to front with the sticky back bit still attached then cut to the right shape then remove and plenty soapy peel off backing and put on inside of window,but he got it wrong way around while cutting and windows were odd so bin it went ha. but i guess its a lot easier with the windows removed good luck and make sure no children are in ear shot lol :lol:
