went to wales... and now got a problem!
« on: June 25, 2007, 21:47:33 »
when i accellerate hard there is a whining/ear peircing noise, i can only imagine it is from the turbo? someone was saying its the thrust bearing on the clutch, but i dont think it is because the clutch was only done in october and it is only when i accellerate hard and not when i depress the clutch.
its a defender 200tdi.
any ideas?

next prob, is i had a cambelt done last monday, and all was fine when i started her up... just the usual puff of black smoke. but since i been playing in wales on the second day i started her up in the morning, and it was fine until i gave her a bit of throttle and then taking off the loud pedal, from the exhaust came white smoke... hmm weird i thought. after running it for 3 or 4 minutes when i depressed the throttle and let off the white smoke was gone?! why, suddenly does it do thatt? and how do i fix it!!
thanks!
Rob !!

Hmmm, is the noise sound like a high pitch whistle, white smoke is usually the turbo!

before you get to deep

check the heat shield on the exhaust front pipe where it passes over the gear box cross member,my front pipe once worked loose and allowed the shield to rest on the cross member causing it to vibrate and make all manner of strange noises.
as for the smoke white normally indicates water, are you using water,is it over heating

hope this helps

White smoke also means partially burnt oil in the exhaust (only real place that comes from is knackered turbo seals) - couple that with a high pitched whining noise and I know where I'd be looking...........

...........................thats the turbo, by the way

I'd diagnose it as the turbo, but befor riping that apart check the head first. Put a cool plate around an inch away from the exhaust exit and check for condensation. If not then take off the air intake hose from the turbo and check for oil traces inside altho its more likely to be in the turbo manifold. with the hose off give the turbo blades a wiggle. a tiny bit off plays not really much of a problem but also check for scores around the inside. hope this helps.
