Not as daft as the question may sound!!!
Been wading many times in my Disco 1 tdi, now I have a Disco 2 V8 which I took wading today in some floods. :P
I know about the bow wave & in take height & breather pipe mods etc, but what about all me accessories?
I have been thinking about this for a couple of months but have not yet had time to "mess" with me motor, you know what I mean, you need to know what is where n stuff.
So!
Where is the breather (if there is one) for me auto box?
Air suspension, the pump & valves are under near side on chassis, and I presume the feed pipe is located high up, or is it? I hope so because the flood I went through was deep in places & I hit the suspension up button!!!!
There is a box just behind my transfer box with a load of rubber pipes coming out, I can only presume vacume pipes because they go to the engine. Is this Ok with water?
As I said I have had no time to tinker with her & I wanna go play without the expensive repairs through non-preperation.
Last of all, what is this (the attached pic)?
I have a pipe on the offside of the engine bay that looks lost!!!
All answers are greatfully received. I presume Land Rover beat me to it & have protected all these, but who knows?

Nope, all accessories still fitted & functional.
It goes down behind engine & disappears, I don't think it goes through bulkhead.
I'm gettin worried now..... :?

Gearbox and axle breathers should appear on the bulkhead - just above where the passengers feet would be (if that makes sense), the air suspension 'air intake' is behind the nearside rear upper light cluster.
Supposed max wading depth for a D2 is 500mm !!!

Thanks for the reply.
I have had a very quick look & the front axle breather is top of bulkhead on the drivers side, another breather is on the passenger side. It comes up and hides behind the rocker cover. The rear axle breather is just inside near side rear wheel arch. As pointed out by Jimbo the air suspension is behind rear light cluster. Think I got those right!
There is still a breather missing, not sure if its the transfer case or auto box breather, I will have to trace what I have already found.
I'm posting this here because before I asked on here I did a google search and found nothing! So this is mine and any one elses reference. I hope someone will find it usefull.
As for the "lonelly pipe" I have posted a picture of, still have no idea what it is. It does say "fbx Bag" on it. ????????

I take it you can't see what it actually goes to then?
It looks like some form of quick release connector so maby its ment to have a blanking plug it it most of the time (caution: pure sepeculation).

if you have a auto can you see the dipstick for the gearbox oil level if not that will be what it is. So it could be the dipstick is missing and that is just the casing for it.
As for depth as long as the electrics are water proof (can of chain guard for motorbike chains) you should be ok with water over the bonnet IF you have a snorkel. If not then dont go deeper than the air intake.

Thanks for your reply but its not for a dipstick, although it does look as if it should be connected or blanked off.
I'm sure someone with a series 2 V8 can see if they have it on theirs and see what it connect too!
I think I'm gonna have to climb under her tomorrow & trace where it goes. Could do with having a look at what goes where in detail.
Will post the out come of the mystery......

I saw an article in Land Rover Owner (this or last month – not sure) noting the problem with the V8 distributor. I don’t know if yours has one or not being a more up-to-date motor. On the older V8’s at least, they have two holes for draining condensation. The article was saying that they have to be plugged and two pipes fitting. From memory, one went to your snorkel and the other went to your break servo? (not sure on that though) as this then provides a run of air through it (thus reducing the chance of condensation!).
Like I said, I presume yours is a more up to date ignition system but on my RRC 3.9 efi it’s the old type of distributor!

Anywhere on the vacuum side of the engine, there is a small vacuum tapping on some engines other than the brake servo though, I'd leave that alone personally, or one of the oil breathers on the plenum. By circulating air you can dry the insides of the dizzy out, they have either 2 or 4 holes in the bottom to allow them to breath. Another thing to do is sheild it with an empty milk carton and spray the top with motorbike chain lube, a sort of sticky oil, or I use white grease becasue that's what I had at the time.

Mine has two holes on the bottom of the dizzy & it did cause me problems as My RRC cut out through a very deep ford & got me stranded & waterlogged :(
The reason it caught me out was because I had gone through it before many times with no problems, so it just shows it can happen anytime if you don't prep your car properly before wading.
So now the dizzy is off, the two holes have been drilled & tapped & fitted with some small nipples from a model shop.
Two breather pipes have also been fitted, just trying to decide the best place for them to go.
Also I've put silicone sealer round any joins on the dizzy like where the vacuum fits just in case & got some new leads to ensure a snug fit on the cap & so forth.
Wish me luck next time :lol:

Thanks for all the replies.
I finally went to Land Rover, asked then nice man behind the service desk & he got a technician.......
The pipe pictured should be free & unconnected, its the vent for the charcoal cannister..... there we go, simple (we all knew that really). There not allowed to vent the tanks direct to the atmosphere anymore, so that also answers my earlier query about the black box with pipes in & out behind the transfer case!
As for your earlier suggestions regarding the dizzy, its all electronic now. No distributor to worry about & all the HT is behind the engine.
All I need to do now is find out where the transfer case & auto box breathers are.

I went through a swollen ford in my TD5 and killed my engine, i hit the water current offside broadside which came over the bonnet and about half way up the drivers window. the engine sputtered lost power but just about got me to dry land the other side.
I called out the RAC and just sat sulking thinking that it had hydrolocked, and fearfull of the cost of a new lump. :oops: the man just sucked his teeth and said it's dead!
on closer inspection there was no sign of water or damp in the air filter, so no hydrolock. The RAC man hooked up his laptop to read the diags but was just getting scrambled garbage back. so we took out the ECU.
about 1/2pint of river water drained out of the holes in the ECU itself!
we got recoverd on the back of a truck and the ECU spent the next couple of days at home on the radiator drying out.
The pressure of the water current hitting the front wheel arch had risen up the drain holes in the ECU holder box and flooded it and the ECU inside.
I've learned my lesson there, that was a scary couple of days thinking about the cost. I now have second thoughts about fitting a snorkel as it seems the ECU is vunerable. Dont ford a swollen river in a TD5 if there is a strong current running right to left and never believe what the depth guage says! :shock:

The same thing happened to my ECU in the incident I just mentioned when I got stranded.
My whole cabin filled with water right up to the base of the seats & my ECU & ABS ECU are under the seats
I got the Rangie running straight after we got it out the water because it runs on LPG ( WD40 in the dizzy cap also ) but as for the petrol side of things, not sure yet as my ECU has been drying out in the kitchen for a week or so.
I've siliconed it all up including the holes it has it has in it & I'm just waiting to put my waterproofed dizzy back in to see how it runs, if it runs on petrol again that is.
It just shows that the good people at Land Rover didn't want us wading our vehicles in deep water...................so waterproof it yourself & don't put your trust in Land Rover to have done it because they haven't.
