Hi there,

We re considering in buying a snorkle, not sure which one yet, Safari, Mantec, SouthDown, hmm, not sure. Could you lot show me some pictures of yours please!? :)

Oh yer anymore makes I havn't mentioned?

Just looking at that link and it suddenly dawned on me, its on the wrong side :!: On the last but one shot you can see it mounted on the drivers side and then a tube going accross the top of the engine to the air intake.
Wouldn't it have been easier to put it on the passengers side :?:

??? Its a V8 carb'd model not an efi, the air intake to the airbox is smack bang centre of the engine bay so surely its exactly the same distance from either side of the car????

One advantage with the drivers side is it doesnt run as much risk of being damaged by hedgerows when driving on normal 2 way roads, certainly round here we have a lot of narrow lanes that can cause probs when you meet the bus coming the other way :)

I did look at putting it on the passenger side but there were too many "accoutrements" in the way. On the drivers side it's an all but clear run to the air box. Only obstacle is the oil filler... but a 45 degree bend sorted that and it actually provides some good stability in the engine bay.

Can't recomend this approach enough... given the cost of commercially available options. Afer all... the parts cost me about Â£20... some forethought and some building time.

Here a safari one on my 200 Tdi
The wiring for the spots, and the breather pipe all run up inside the snorkel and exit at the top.

I think the safaris are the smartist out them all, what about a mantec one, really quite undistated, any pictures guys?

I like the look of the safari one but I have seen them damaged going through narrow gates as the snorkle hits before the wing mirror. I fancy having a go at making a home made one to save money but running it through the wing up to the windscreen like the camel one by mantek but without the ugly top I'll stick with the cooper top.

Mantec ones are simple, something which we would like actually as it is the main vehicle at the end of the day.

I can vouch for the strenght of the Safari ones.
I put a nice dent in the side of the Disco a while back but the snorkle only has a scratch on it.

I've got a Mantec 'top bit' that I got for Â£25 and the rest inside the wing to the airbox is B&Q drain pipe bits and glued and siliconed together.

I cut the hole in the wing for the snorkel top by trial and error and (if I say so myself) a pretty good fit.

got to say safaris are solid- i slid my truck about twenty foot down a hill sideways and the snorkel was the first point of impact with the tree that stopped me! unfortunately i then slid round the tree and lost a wingmirror and put a nice big scar down the side of the truck. oh well but the snorkel is fine!!!

There is an argument that at least with the plastic Safari ones, the snorkel's likely to give before major damage is done to the rest of the truck. That said, they seem pretty tough. And they are very neat. I've had 2.

How easy are snorkels to fit. How did you lot find them when doing them? Got any quides you have in your gallerys ? :D (Would like to know about safari, mantec and south down please)

I've fitted 2 Safari's now
The instructions in the box are very clear and easy to follow
My only tip for the job is take your time.
Dont expect to have it fitted in an hour
I took 3 hours to do the first one on my V8, rushing it.
When i did the one on my Tdi i took 7 hours at a slow pace
Mainly because i wanted it to be much neater and 100% water tight.
I brought 2 hole cutters for for my 300 Tdi fit
1 large one for the wing and inner wing and a smaller one for the air box hole (sizes were printed in the instructions)

You have to move the air box inwards to accomadate the new pipe work on a 300 (all parts supplied and easy to do)

You can see from this picture that the air intake is now on the side instead of the front, which has a blanking plate fitted (supplied)

The Safari also comes with a template for the wing cut and hole placement.
I found it to be a simple job, just take your time and do it right

Thanks for that jake, seems simple then! I think we'll go with the safari because of the looks 8) and also sounds easy to fit. And I'm pretty sure the safari is the cheapest (right?).

Got to say I come out on the side of the Safari's - look good, high impact resistance and to be fair; the passenger side door mirror is a good "early warning device" if you are about to clout the left-hand wing on the scenery. :twisted:

Take your time, follow the instructions and it'll look well smart.

PS - make sure you get the right one, because they are slightly different depending on if your vehicle has air con or not.

The Safari is very easy to fit compared to the other brands, mainly because you dont have to remove the wing to fit it.
Steve Ray is spot on...
Make sure you state your vehicle type, engine type and whether you have ABS or not.
The ABS difference is lenght of the snorkle along the wing.
ABS is a long wing snorkle, no ABS is shorter.

I have a safari one and I think it looks the smartest out of all the makes. The others I dont think suits the disco. The mantec one for example I think looks better on a defender where the safari one doesnt look good on a defender.

My raised air intakes for the axles etc all run up the side of the snorkel and then go into the snorkel top under the jubilee clip. You cant even see they are there.

I have been through water up to half way up the windscreen and the air box was still dry as a bone.

I ran my breathers into the air box. Didn't see the point of running them any higher up the snorkel, as no water will get in the air box anyway...

If it does, you're knackered anyway...

Simondarby, I was going to do exactly the same, stick them all into the airbox, but when i spoke to a mechanic mate of mine he advised against it, he thought it could cause problems with pressure differences i.e. the pull of the air being sucked into the engine could cause a siphon effect on the axles! I take it you have had no problems with this and i wasted my time running it up the snorkel.
