Wharfe View Cafe

Otley (5-6miles north of Leeds)
Situated on the banks of the River Wharfe, this is a simple 'back to basics' cafe.
Ample portions, good food & cheap.
Last time I was there (September) Steak Pie, Peas, Chips, pint of Tea, Treacle Sponge Pudding cost me £2.60

They bake on site, the Pies aren't the usual fare that comes in tin-foil, but baked in a 2foot square tin & cut out in big chunks.

It looks like this

On a wet mid-week day, you'll struggle to find a seat inside. On a sunny  weekend you'll be hard pressed to find a seat outside.

Closed for renovation/redecoration at the beginning of February, with a view to being open toward the end of the month.
I haven't had the opportunity to revisit since the re-opening.
As soon as possible, I will & comment on food/prices & decor

I made my way to Otley this morning with the specific cause of visiting this establishment.
Redecorated & new windows
Food still good value, hot & piles of it =D>
Meat & Potatoe pie, Chips, Peas & pint-mug of tea all for £2.70

Listened to one man saying he'd been going in there for over 30years, so it must be good to have stayed in business so long!
Even with differing owners through the years, it'd still need to provide good food to survive

An excellent little cafe, complete with the added attraction of a  large model railway upstairs & plenty of Hornby, Lima & Fleischmann bits for sale.
You will quite possibly find a variety of live-stock in the adjoining stables; Piglets, Lambs, Puppies, Calfs, etc...

BEWARE!!!
If approaching this from the south-east on the A59 down Beamsley Bank, this road is a fast 3-laner.
You are advised to pass Storiths Lane & turn back on yourself at the bottom roundabout, as opposing traffic coming up the hill will use the centre-lane & traffic following you may think you are overtaking when you are actually attempting to turn right.

A first-class Fish & Chip shop.
I was first introduced to this shop over 30 years ago. I remember even 25 years ago all she sold was Fish, Fish-Cakes & Chips - people queued outside before she opened.
Now Annie has diversified; she also sells Mushy Peas & Curry Sauce. People still queue, and that's with 4 others within easy reach.
Quality speaks for itself.

Buy your dinner and wander down to sit by the 16th century roadbridge on the riverside park.
If you're feeling up to it, buy a 'Whaler' & Chips

A wonderfully obscure Indian restaurant with no licence. However they have an 'arrangement' with the pub next door (Queens Head) for drinks to be taken in to accompany food, or take your own.
Cheap & good food.

A truely spectacular dining experience. The food (bar the rice) is prepared on a large hot-plate at your table by a Chef.
It's all flashing Knives & flames.
A venue for a special evening out

Your Sushi is prepared as you watch as well

The only downside is sharing your table with total strangers (4-6 to a table/hot-plate/Chef)
Oh, and the bills are high. We went in late 2003 & paid around £100.00 for dinner for 2 :shock:  (including Sake & wine for Joanne)

Reknown in the area for its huge platefuls.
The Steaks & Mixed Grills are something to behold.
It being at one time, as the name suggests, the ferry-boat house to reach Methley at the other side of the River Aire.
For Rugby fans it might be a place to visit as the land-lord was (so I'm told) a Castleford, & Subsequently, an England player.
There are displays of his memorabilia in the eating areas & bar. His name being Brian Lockwood

Guest beers appear & I believe they were starting to brew their own at the time of our last visit.
Oh, & it's allegedly haunted

A wonderful restaraunt in the centre of Leeds. Mostly Italian food, but with some variety.
We've just come back (about 45minutes before writing this) & it was excellent.
Very 'Art-Deco' influenced in its interior design, but no worse for it.
Admittedly not the cheapest meals, we paid £150 for 4 of us, but we didn't scrimp on the chosen items.

A typical country pub, with stuffed animals & various hunting prints, there is a wonderful selection of old photographs of the surrounding areas.

It is owned by a Portugese couple & they do a wicked Chicken Piri-Piri

The food on the menu is worth the visit, a bit out of the way to find though.

Sorry, can't comment on which brewery that supply them, I' m tee-total

The Six Chimneys on Kirkgate in Wakey, is canny for cheap and cheerful meals.......I used to work there when it 1st opened.

We also used to go to what used to be the Ferry Boat in Altofts,(don't know what it changed it's name to, been back in Middlesbrough too long lol) used to walk down from the nurses residences, calling in at the British Oak along the way..........

Aww bringing back memories..... yes I lived there and yes I trained at Pinderfields, but did the first 18months at Pontefract, Moved back to Middlesbrough in 2001.

A great little Tandoori restaraunt set in a former bike-shop/small supermarket (ex-ASDA) at the back of (the remains) of Pontefract Castle.

We've been several times in the past & always found it agreeable.

In fact the wife is going again tonight with friends

She reports back that it's apparantly closed down now & the site is up for sale/redevelopment.

Not a posh place by any means, with a boarded upshop nect door.
It's perhaps not the most obvious place to eat, but with such delicacies as;
Curried Goat
Jerked Chicken
SaltFish
Rice & Pea (Kidney Beans)
Ackee
Sweet Potatoes
Plantains

For myself, I had Plantains, Curried Goat, Rice & Peas, 2 Dumplings (more like a salted dougnut, without the jam filling)

We'll definately go back again at some point

Four of us went, & with drinks paid £22.00

We visited this wonderfully preserved 'hostelry' on Friday evening.
The squeamish (& the PC brigade) may be put off by the large amounts of stuffed/mounted animals around the interior.

The food comes in h-u-g-e portions if you wish it to (try a 'Billy Bunter', 20 separate items in a Mixed grill!)

Finding a table may be problematic at times, but console yourself by watching the serving staff bringing copious amounts of food from the kitchens'.
Sufficient, even, for an American!!!


Even outside , it's worth a visit, notice the, stables, posting-bell & old sign.

Next time you visit Simmonites (if you can still afford to eat) seek out the Ring O' Bells - it's painted white and situated up a hill, on a road running parallel to the main drag through Thorton.  Great food, impressive portions - never drink and drive so dunno about the beer.

The Grouse at Oakworth - great food, great beer (close enough for the missis to drive).  Also supplier of copious amounts of water when my Rangie boiled on the way home from a playday!


If you like Chinese - The Orient, Keighley next to the bus depot.  Terrific food, nice atmosphere (when you are not the only ones in!)

Sumptious surroundings, can get very busy.

Booking may be essential on a weekend?
However, we went with a couple of friends to the Garforth branch on Saturday evening (weekend prior to the date of this post) at about 19:30 & could barely get in the door, let alone ask about the possibility of a table.

We then travelled to the branch on the A64 at Copmanthorpe (between Tadcaster & York)
It was busy, but we were seated within 3 minutes of walking in.


The bill?
£67.00 for the four of us, including drinks, starters, mains & side-orders.

Brian (the old landlord) left a few years back (great pity) a string of managers followed and then unfortunately the Boat shut for a while. It is now back open I am told but have not yet been - used to be a regular of mine when I lived in Allerton.

It was extened IIRC under Brians tenure and can now seat more than double what it could.

They did indeed start up their own micro brewery but I'm not sure what has become of this.

This truely is a Fish and Chip restaurant, not a cafe, (theres a takeaway round the side too).

This is where the Press, Media and players come for there fish and chips when the test match is on. You need to book a table at at least the previous test match if not earlier to get a table.
