Not sure but could it be the restrictor blocking the gearstick going into reverse??

i know i have had problems with the mechanism playing up in other cars.

Could be worth a check first as its the cheapest :)

Gen-X... check out this post. The author found a problem with the plunger that provides the gated resistance between first & reverse. Might be the same problem.

Also... if yer mate is doing things on the cheap... check out my phot galleries for a £20 home made snorkle.

had a similar problem last month- turned out id got a stone stuck on the top of the gear box underneath where the gear lever needed to be to engage reverse! cheapest fix yet- just knocked the stone off!!!
