Another 64 million dollar question Andy.
If you don't seal it then it may get bits of twigs and bees beleive it or not into the dump valve and jam it up stopping it from working.
I left mine in and regularily clear it of debris. I've been thinking of making something to replace it when off road.
I'm not totally convinced that a snorkel won't take on water at high speed in pouring rain. So would prefer the dump valve to help clear anything that might collect.
