Big thanks  to barmie brummie for the weekends fun, glad the new disco is all up and running, steve has asked me to say a big thank you for the old disco in payment for labour given, hes so excited about getting it on the muddy stuff, we will pop over tomorrow nite to look at the other disco shell, as betty boos old shell is very holey, and doing a shell swop will be far quicker, plus we can paint it as a shell while its off the chassis.

Also many thanks for all the scaffolding tube, looking forward to hours of bending and welding making a full cage for steve and the disco

Yes a good weekend was had & Iam really shattered now Becky's new Disco runs a treat she will be pleased, will be putting the new wheels/tyre's on on tues, then get cb & cd player fitted befor the weekend & hay presto all done, Oh what a good daddy am I  :lol:   ,

Out of curiosity, what do you use to bend the scaff tubes to make the cage?

Well to bend the scaff tube, ive made a bender, using a 10 ton bottle jack, mounted in to a frame with two rollers above the jack, and a former on the jack ram, how far you pump the jack depends on  the radius of bend you get, what i tend to do is count the number of full pumps on the jack, then you get them all the same, works really well, cost me about 35 quid to make,

Not wishing to be a pain, but scaffold tube isn't the correct stuff to be using for a roll cage :!:  :!:  :!:

Im not going in to the whole tube thing, again, this cage is for low speed rolls, not msa spec racing at speed, im a coded welder and all the joints will be notched, even if it is scaff tube is better than not having any there at all, it does well holding up people on buildings, anyway not going to argue the case, thats what im doing, not going to sell any on, if mates want them i will give them away, Its not as if im building a works rally car!!!!

AFAIK it's got something to do with what happens to scaffolding when you bend it... hence you only see straight poles :roll:

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of metallurgy will pop along soon  :)

It's because scaffold tube is seamed. It's cheaper to produce that way but if bent the seam can split

Can you buy the dies for that thing seperately?, or what are you using for the die on yours?

pipe benders work better if you 'clamp' the tube on both edges of the bend...so i've been told by a bloke who does it for a living.

i'm not a fan of scaffold tube cages hence im getting a proper one made, however as mick points out...it is definately better than nothing!

Thanks to Mike for helping me Dad swap the engine, lift kit etc over.

I like my new toy and cant wait to take it off roading and get it muddy - it's to clean!!

Luckly Fathers day and his B'day have gone so it's now left to Xmas - a few months to save up i suppose - i'll see what i can do!!!

if you are going to bend scaffold tube then make sure the seam (weld) is along the side of the bend not top or bottom. Doing this helps with the seam not splitting.

Some of the things i do at work include bending seamed tube (and notching on flywheel press. if your quick i may be able to cowmouth (yes that what its call) some of the tube for you. Got the  tool in the press  this week. hope its 48.8 mm tube
