diesel mot emissions
« on: July 14, 2007, 19:14:52 »
An old trick not so common now which used to get an old engine through a test was  to remove the air filter and blow a handful of vim or ajax scouring  powder into the engine. It scored the bores enough to stop oil smoke.

Another which works wonders is if in doubt use a gallon of petrol to a full tank of diesel put petrol in first then fill an almost empty tank with diesel works fine for smoke. Don't run petrol mix all the time cos it will cause premature wear on engine.

I used vim for years got and extra 1000 miles smoke free running don't know if you can still buy scouring powder though.

Not sure I fancy chucking scouring powder in there but the petrol trick is an old one.  In some engines up to 30% petrol will not cause major problems, but don't quote me.

Another one that's come to light recently is veg oil/biodiesel as a fuel system cleaner.

Or just leave the air filter off for the test.

Or screw the engine speed stop in a couple of turns.

Change the oil before the test, petrol or desel.

When the engines knacked anyway scouring powder just gets a few more miles out of it without giving out clouds of blue smoke it works. But only for worn rings.
