..and this is what was discovered when it went into the garage.
Seems that when the previous owner had the brakes done, the wrong pads were fitted at the back. As they weren't quite the right size, they ended up slipping and pressing against the disc carrier, over time grinding into it. The result is one very nice, very neat, groove the looks like it's been machined into the carrier in a workshop. Both rear discs were the same.
And here's the culprit...
Also had a knackered UJ replaced, which was causing some rather unpleasant vibration!

I'm havingf the same on Blue but not as bad, it's because the rusty scal on teh inside has been scrapped away so often the callipers are now too big.

thats the correct pads for your vehicle but you will find even with new pads they will fall through through time due to the calipers wearing on the inner faces where the pads sit

Beat me to it - I was just gonna say that....
You'll be one of the 'strange click when braking the first time after changing direction' gang then?..........
I know I am.

Hrm, nice. So I'll be chucking otherwise decent pads away regularly then? Hardly any wear on the pads themselves.

Well I'll see how this lot go, and if (more likely when!) the same problem appears, I'll go down that route then. Cheers for the info!

Try drilling a hole through both pads and fitting a split pin through both pads because it only drops the pad closer to the disk. Placing the pin through the pads stops the pad dropping if you drill the hole in the raised bit of the pad in the centre it stops it happening. I have used this method devised by simdeb and it works. Pads still wear ok but no extra marks on the hub. Have a go my motor past its mot with this mod and the pads are still going strong. I used the split pins from the front disk pads they work a treat.
ps sorry no photo's

So you are adding a 3rd pin on each side then? might give that a try as on my LSE I have trouble with the pads jamming in the calliper and running hot.

Sorry for the delay
Yes a 3rd pin is fitted in the middle and it stops the problem from doing it again. You don’t have to replace the callipers and for the cost of a front pad retaining clips its pennies rather than pounds. That’s got to be good. I would love to pinch the credit for the idea but this one belongs to simdeb. Smart [!Expletive Deleted!]. lol

Don't even think I'll have to waste the clip as the front vented pads have a longer pin so the old one will do.
Knew I kept them for a reason
