today was mostley spent on damage evaluation....i think i got away pretty lightley with only a broken headlight clip and instroments not working(anyone know whats up with that???)

took the front end appart to see what i could do about shunt nosing it(i have plans)

cleaned all the crap off of it

the winch tray i have "obtained" it about 3/4" - 1" too narrow for the disco, i was under the impression that the defender chassis was the same with as the disco,
which it must be because i wouldnt have thought it would be faulty goods. so now i have a problem.....i need to mount it somehow but the question is how.
the way i see it i have 3 options

1. cut the chassis rails(whats left of them) and re weld some old ones on further in

2. put some packers in between the gap(not sure weather that would cause stress problems or not)

3. cut the rails off and mount the tray ontop of the bed(again i dont know about stress)

not much done just disassembling.... want to get rid of the rot in the wings so I'm doing some tube work and losing the front overhang....not yet though as i don't have a job and the budget is spent! anyone want to give me a job or lend me a pipe bender :P.....or better still i can sell my self! hahahaha nono
if anyone has some suggestions....or a job for me please do tell!
or failing that i can make stuff...i have a grinder and a welder....let me know ;) hahaha(just don't tell the tax man)

instruments dies when i got back from bircham, took the dash apart and wiggled a few wires and pocked a few holes and the only thing i got working again is the highbeam light! lame!

i don't think losing the front bumper is a particularly good idea but the trucks with this done look damn cool! also i get a pretty good approach angle just the way it is(on 33s) i would like to go to boggers sometime down the line but as said i am skint and fitting rubber like that causes serious problems!

at this stage I'm open to suggestions, if anyones got some then do let me know ;)

I never would have thought that a front bumper would look alright on the rear but it could work
The wrap around corners could finish the bottom of the tub a treat  :D
What made you try that idea?
As for the front end, the 8274 is a better choice of winch for a monster truck but what are you thinking for the actual bumper wings?
Keep the idea's flowing, this is getting more and more interesting as it progresses

One other thing to point out
Get some measurements of an 8274 before you weld
If the winch cage stays in this possition the winch might hit the bottom of the bonnet/slam panel

Jake, on the day it arrived i called Liz and she said she couldn't give me definitive measurements it was about 220mm deep and from other pics of 8274s i can sort of guess the height...its not going in that high though if that's what you were thinking :D
as for the rear(front) bumper I'm not sure weather i should or not.......its so pretty and i would have to cut it and reshape it and its allot of money......but then again i didn't pay full whack for it :lol: the steering guard will make a nice rear skid plate too :twisted:

i was going to modify the D44 bumper to take an 8274 but with my new plan i couldnt do that and moving the 8274 tray to the front ment i diddnt have a rear winch tray or a rear bumper so thought i may aswell give it a go. this also means im not tempted to put an 8274 in the rear now...just an xp or something saves cost :lol:

feel a bit stupid at the moment, the truck was supposed to be going to billing and put on the BLRC stand but i cant get a trailer.......should have sorted that out really. when i clean the garage up a little (and eventually get a work bench!) I'm going to start making one.
anyways.....today i stood around.......looked at it......put somemore back to gether.......looked at it didn't like it then took it apart again! went on like that for about 3 hours. also got the dash working again....was the fuse that i knew nothing about that was under the steering wheel! LAME!
also figured that i work better when I'm not thinking about it....in the 3 hours of looking and dicking about i had serious thoughts about not doing it but then i thought it doesn't look right with such a modified back end and NOTHING done to the front....I'm not quite going as far as a shunt nose at the moment because i would then have to mount the rad in the back with the cooler and do all the pipe work and bracketry on a hoop that isn't even staying there. its not Worth it at the moment. i pretty much have all the materials needed for the job(apart from the tube) so i think it may be cheaper this way......also......shhhhhhhh but i got an interview tomorrow, but shhhhh if my step mum knows she will not stop going on about it! :-$

ANYWAY!

sealed up that drainplug thing on the defender air bin(would have welded it if i had a TIG set)




also removed the wiring from the kenlowe that wasn't there


trying to get the crap out of the way in the engine bay ready for chopping

ust read the whole lot, looks bloody immense!! i was thinking of getting rid of me sportraks hardtop (removable anyway) and welding in a panel behind the front seats to turn it into a pickup of sorts. then sorting the suss and everything else out. all ive done at the miute is whacked a gert chunky set of grizzly claws on with no suss lift!hairy but chopped some bits off to make the tyres fit and its not bad. trouble is with the independent front suss, articulation is not the best. :oops:

left the camera at the garage so no photos today.
started making the spacers/mounting points for the 8274 tray. also talked to jim at gigglepin....top bloke, really knows how to sell his product! i was begining to sway to one of john sales' stud150 but thats £1400 by its self. the over all set up of the giggle pin winch seems to be alot "cheaper" and as jim said there dominating the uk challange events and seem to be bomb proof!

diffs are fine but wouldnt want to go any bigger! if i aquire some boggers i will be summing up the cost difference between strengthinging my axles and an extra few inches o lift against portals and a few days spent with a welder.
sailsburys may be an alternative but i wouldnt know! i see people running agri tyres on them but  dont know if they have put in uprated shafts or not.
