that is because there all using variable vain turbos,

Mostly standard turbos on the wagons I've seen / been inolved with.

dump valve sound ok but surely large intercooler , gas flow heads and larger manifolds would produce more pull. doesnt thre fuel pump pressure have to be uped abit to cope with the start rolling of 35s plus

if nos is used on v8s  mega icelandic hill climers  . a small lpg tank which is supposed to increase torque by 50 percent roughly would provide mega torque when required

that is because there all using variable vain turbos, the dump valve is to improve response time and lag, with the variable vain nither is applicable.

this is the funnyest thread in a longtime

a dump valve wont work on a diesel specially a TDi as it doesnt have a throttle butterfly, for a DV to work it requires a vacum to open, something a diesel doesnt naturally create as its an excess air device,

to get good power out a diesel you need more colder air & more fuel, dump valves make no odds other than sounding a bit like a chaved corsa,
although i dont always agree with eeyore i have to this time as oven on a standard 200tdi to get gains is more boost more fuel, bigger IC & exhaust & hello 150Bhp

mines is currently running 150Bhp with the above mods,
next stage would be a T25/28 TURBO with a race pump & injectors, should make 160+ but will be rather black, better option would be got for a 300tdi & fit a race pump & injectors, exhaust & FMIC & gas flow the head, should make 175+ but ticksover a tad high, more ponies & torque would require a bigger turbo or VNt setup but then its all about the package & the finish which ideally needs set up on a rolling road

Just a brief query, what's an "FMIC"? Guessing it's some sort of intercooler but the FM bit puzzled me. A larger intercooler is probably next on my list, only snag is I have aircon and understand that this makes it difficult to upgrade the IC?

I recall reading somewhere that 150bhp is a sensible output for the 300TDI, trying to go much above that isn't practical for a normal car as it becomes increasingly prone to melting or blowing up.

i don't know if they used VVturbos it was just a logical assumption that i came to......but assumptions are the mother of all [!Expletive Deleted!] ups!
would have thought a dumpvaulve would make some difference when used in conjunction with other mods. thought the idea of them is to vent the gasses on one side of the turbo to allow air to move more freely and reduce the amount of lag after changing gear. if i am wrong sorry, i can admit to any mistakes made but i am pretty sure it will make a difference, i am completely self taught with this stuff so sorry if i have come across as being a smartass but i would rather you just telling me where i have gone wrong than just taking the Michael!

FMIC= Front mount intercooler
on a tdi the cooler is mounted on one side,

150bhp is a good drivable car & does not bad on fuel, mine returns 25mpg on road tyres

That's a relief, I thought FMIC stood for Frickin' Massive InterCooler!  :lol:

Does anyone know anything about fitting a larger intercooler to a 300 TDI with aircon? I've seen some solutions involving twin smaller intercoolers, one of which was between the chassis rails. Oddly enough the idea of putting a fragile part down there on an off roader doesn't appeal!

That is funny, one of the lads at work has just got a hilux pick up and the first thing i noticed was the intercooler screaming out for a rock to hit it. first time he asked me to go off road with him he put a rock through it and then wondered where the power had gone when my 200tdi heap was leaving him for dust. that was a real, they didnt think about this when designing it moment.

On the dump valve idea, i recently pulled my exhaust off with a rather large branch, it came appart just after the turbo and if you want a cool noice that is what to do, hearing the turbo wistle when changing gear with the added noice of a tractor inbetween, but the exhast fumes do come into the cab so not ideal. hehehe
When i get stuck, i am just providing every one around recovery experience, how generous!

Jeremy Fearne's website mentions aircon-fitted Discos on the intercooler upgrade pricelist. He charges an extra £50 to kit them out so it must be feasible, just takes a bit longer. I can't see him resorting to satellite intercoolers in vulnerable places with his experience of these things.

right....back to the matter in hand
as I'm moving(and probably into a smaller garage) the roll bar had to come off, it put up a good fight but i win! :grin:. its sitting in the garage waiting for jay to come get it. chopped even more of the chassis off as well. the winch tray is going in the back and because the rear of the chassis has the curve in it, it wouldn't fit properly, so broke out the trusty grinder. some new yanks moved in to the bungalow opposite, they came over for a look and asked if it was a Chevy blazer with a body kit.....not the first time this has happend, anyway pointed out the LAND ROVER writing on the bonnet and instantly asked if it was a v8 when i say its diesel they start taking the [throw it]...mines louder than the tall ones v8 dodge ram :azn: HA!

bah! tray wouldn't fit properly so had to undo all the work i had already done!mounting it a little higher too.....no particular reason i just think it looks better. apart from that sweet f/a done! chance that it will be going to peterborough, i missed billing on account it was in pieces....the BLRC stand was shamefull too!. hopefully will be at landrover fest.

i think you shoudlk hould replace the original boot floor with either a thicker steel or aluminium with a coating of marine ply and some chequer plate what you think?

i dony know if uve seen the series "a 4x4 is born"??? if u get a chance whatch what he does with the back of his its mustard i think as hir rollcage is direct to the chassis

have recorded it all on the sky+, i am not a fan of that 100", i think im the only one! its not that i dont like it i think its beautiffuly done and alot of time has gone into it but he has done evereything i wouldnt do!! he puts all that time into a paint job which will only get scratched, a v8 isnt a choice i would make for an off roader, and if i was going to sort the axels out all in one go i would buy portals........i would wouldnt get a deal with scrapiron racing!

to make something like the golddigga bumper that would provide enough clearance would require me to move the tray upwards....i think if i did that i wouldn't have enough weld contact on the winch tray, hence the reason for angling the "bumper to be". it also protects the tyres from the sharp arches, found a gouge in my tyre yesterday that i can only put down to the arches!

Just in case you don't have enough on your hands then what your truck need is hydraulic (or air  :-#) suspension so it can be lowered when needed.

what's wrong with the simple solution Boss?? either have a set of old rims with old 205 x 50 x 16 tyres on (24" rolling dimeter) for moving it in and out of garage to work on, it will look bliddy ridiculous but it will also drop your roofline by 4.5 or 5.5 inches assuming you've got 33's or 35's at the minute, or even cheaper just drop the pressures right down to get it in or out, you can always put them up again once it's through the door so they don't sit flat.
