The strength (hardness) of the bolts is more important than the size, check to see if they have 8.8 on the bolts heads, if so they will be fine.Any larger and they wouldn't fit through the chassis.
You will find if you have them tight that they spin round to the chassis trapping your towrope in place, which is why many people have them loose.

JATE rings can be fitted with a towbar can they?
