4wd sticky?

Hi guys,
took my XJ for a little bit of light green laning yesterday - first time used it off road since buying it. ( its a 4.0 auto)
All is well, but when back on road, it seemed reluctant to go back into 2wd. Gear lever selected it easy enough, but the Part Time 4wd light stayed lit, and it drove like something was rubbing or if you can imagine a tyre rubbing or similar. I pulled up onto a curb and then the light went out and all was fine again. Took about 5 minutes in total before I pulled up and it was sorted.. any idea?

I know the Pajeros do this, hey seem to acknowledge the change then wait for the right moment to change out when it seems right. Maybe the same thing?

Once you change the lever, try reversing a little way, that might do it.

it's one of two things as i see it.......#1 you have a slightly seized link (due to lack of use) free off as required or #2 you had transmission wind-up and it was still in four wheel.

What IOM said.  The more you use it, the easier it generally becomes.  

Take it onto a wet / muddy field, or gravel car park and exercise the transfer case a bit.  You can transfer between 2WD, Part-Time 4x4 (High Ratio) and Full-Time 4x4 at speeds of up to 55 mph - but do this when driving in a straight line.  

To change to Part-Time Low Ratio stop the vehicle, select Neutral on the transmission, then Neutral on the Transfer Case, then slot it into Part-Time Low Ratio, then select drive when the Part-Time Light is on.  If it's sticky then you can do this whilst allowing the vehicle to roll gently foward at 1-2 mph in Neutral, whilst moving the T/C through Neutral to 4-Lo.  To change out of 4-Lo stop the vehicle, put transmission in Neutral, then move T/C to Neutral ( Part Time light should go off) then to Full-Time 4x4 (Green Full Time light should show on dash), then select drive, move forward and select other high-ratio settings on the T/C whilst driving in a straight line.

Incidently, you can use Full-Time 4x4 on-road at all times, as the T/C diff is open on that setting.

I had the same issue with mine and in my case
as has been said it was down to a combination
of lack of use by prev owner and windup
due to diferent makes of tire giving
slight difference's in diamiter exasabating the windup


problem cured by new tires (matching set)
and liberal use of the leaver


Q is there a noticable increase in fuel consumption running
in 4H part time ?

I cant say i noticed any increase in fuel consumption, but I was only in PT for about a mile...
How exactly does wind-up happen - and what is it?
When it was stuck in PT it felt almost like the tyres were flat or rubbing on the arches, wasnt a nice feeling at all!
Oh by the way - what is the Panic - Valet buttons on the dash?

That's the alarm. The alarm arms itself after a short while, pressing valet will make the green led come on and stop it arming itself, but use carefully cus it disarms the alarm completely until you press the button again. Press panic if someone is car-jacking you - it will set the alarm off instantly.

i thought it was to clean the seats when you realise you are in drive, high range 2wd just as you go over edge of that large decent on your local offroad center  :shock:
