Gearbox exchange

:?: Hi there, this may be a silly question, but what is the difficulty rating of changing a transfer box on a 1996 3dr Discovery.  It's a 300tdi.  I've never done a gearbox exchange before so quite new to it.  I have some limited knowlege of the mechanicals of the car but this looks a bit harder.  Any help would be glorious.  Many thanks.  Kevin. :)

With all the kit, peace of pee.

However, doing them on your back is a ball ache......, however, having done three or four gear boxes this way, I feel that I have it off to a tee (even though I have had them drop on me).

If its not urgent, come along to one of the meets and get in on the maintenance days that we have.

I'm sure that you will get guidance and assistance with the task.

8) Many thanks Chris.  Im on the sick at the mo so Im trying to get it done as soon as.  When I get back to work Im always knackered so would never get the chance.  It looks straight forward enough but is it  :?:  I will try to make one of the meeting though.  Many thanks.  Kevin. 8)

Without the correct kit and persons to help, I wouldn't try it on your own.

The transfer box must weigh in at close to 50-60 kilos and laying on your back, fills more like a 100.

If you did get it out and do want you need to do, trying to line it up without damaging the seal is near impossible without four pairs of hands.......

I was going to the brother-in-laws' place to do it so he can supervise, and got my mate roped into helping.  I bearly managed to carry the gear box and transfer box from my car to the garage so deadlifting into place is out of the question :shock:   Thank for the advice though.

For the transfer box, replace each bolt you remove with some threaded bar. That way you have more control over sliding the box on and off without damaging oil seals and shaft.

A job I am about to do as I need to reseal, thankfully I have a pit and some helpers...

Having had to assist four other blokes to bench press Chriss9119's gearbox... I recomend borrowing or hiring.... or even buying an engine hoist!   :shock:  :roll:  :lol:

or just do wot i did took the transfer box down than slid the oil seal on to the shaft that way wen you lift it up you can balence it on the shaft without damaging the seal and wen you do all the nut up the seal slides in to the box .i havent had any leaks yet but now i have said it you just watch and your right its bloody heavy wen your trying to fit it on your own
