I am on quiet a few forums and there is one that I am on and I have now found out today that all the private messages are being read.

Is this a normal thing to have done by admin people or is this just a very bad practice? The thing I sent privately too another user has now got me into a sticky situation as an admin or two has miss read it and taken it the wrong way. grrrr

I feel that my private messages being read to people and from people is a breech of my privacy. I feel that letters (you remember the ones. The ones that get put through a slot in your front door by a "postman") text messages and PM's should all be treeted with the same utter most respect and privacy. I wouldn't dare go into someones house and pick up thier mail and read it unless they gave it to me to read and said "here, have a read of this", so why read pm's????

am I getting picky in me old age????

Anyone know of any other forums that the admins read pm's? If this is a common thing then I will stop sending pm's from this second onwards. I have sent quiet personal things through pm's before now and even things like my phone number and or address.

rant over.

right bud where to begin     ...i am admin on plcuk and we have the ability to read pm's as most forums do..... infact when you redgister you read through the do's and dont's on our forum it tells you admin have the ability to read pm's.

just because the facility is there doesnt mean to say its used. i know that the 3 admin on there do not read pm's. we believe that PRIVATE messages are just that.

i am a member on some forums where the admin there do read them and i am aware that they do so i dont pm from there, i email instead

different clubs ad different rules i suppose mate.....

PRIVATE MESSAGES SHOULD BE PRIVATE

just incase anyone is panicking it isnt a 4x4 forum. Landy owners who run forums are too nice to do this.

Who reads the small print? Maybe I should from now on!!!

Just because they can read the messages does not give thhem the right to without just cause. What you have discribed is illeagal and if I found out an admin had read my private messages I would either sue or punch them on the nose depending on who they were!!

only on certain forums Keri. I am sure that MC doesn't read them from threads in the past and the fact that I know admin have alot more work on thier plate keeping this fantastic club up and running than reading through pm's. MC must have thousands of pm's going through the system each day.

I am only concerened about this 1 specific forum I am on. I strongly stress this has Nothing to do with MC.

It is very very very bad practice and as far as Mud-Club is concerned the Administrators view it as being in such distaste that not only will we not do it, but we have put safeguards in place to stop us trying.

That's not to say it's not technically possible, but it's morally reprehensible to do so various people will testify to the Admins having publicly stated they want no part in any organisation that treats it's members in such a way ...

Besides,  if anyone wants to have a go at the administrators round here, they don't exactly use PMs to do it :(

That is exactly the type of thing we want to read  :D

I used to be a moderator for a car club and the admin team NEVER read pm's.... private or personal means just that!

Maybe we should all ask the question on all the forums we use.... "Do the site administrators read pm's as a matter of practise or is it something that is only done when there is a serious need to do so?"

Although I have only been a part of the Mud Club for a short time I already feel secure that this site and it's users are trustworthy :)

That entirely depends upon whether it needed to be said at all...  however, I feel such discussions are somewhat outside of the realm of the current conversation.

I'm glad to hear MC feel it is VVV bad practice. I hope all the other forums take on this role.

If it was for something that someone has done and was schemed up through pm's, then yes I feel it is viable to look back over old PM's to use as evidence for police if something so drastic had been done. For having a laugh or some other type of PM then I feel it is bad to read them too. Maybe the admins reading them are on a power trip????

You'd most likeley end up paying a lot of court costs.

It does happen sadly although not on MC as Datalas stated, I can name at least two sites that do it, but I wont, although it shouldnt be hard to work out one of them :) Private message does men just that over here but you'll find it in the T7C of most sites. Another one you'll often find which is more shocking is that on posting material to a forum the forum owner takes copyright ownership as part of the T&C (again, not mc) Read the small print guys!
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

It wasn't a "discussion" it was just a general statement  :)  that goes for everyone and everything.
