Ford Escort Leaking - Help!
« on: July 25, 2007, 22:39:46 »
Sorry to swear, but I need some help with my wife's car, Ford Escort Mk6 on a V plate.

The boot has a leak somewhere (rain water) but I cannot see where. The seals, light seals all seem intact and okay. It is not everytime it rains or when parked in one position (i.e. uphill or down), but very randomly. Sometimes puddles by spare wheel other times not.

If you remove all the rear boot carpet and side trims, on the inner wheelarch section are two what look like vents for want of a better word. My wife seems to think the water is getting in there but I have seen no direct evidence, although it is possible. They dopnt actually vent to anything, they are just odd bits of plastic?? Anyone know what they are / could be?

Sorry for the non-landy modern car stuff, but its driving me mad and the boot is starting to smell now...   :(

Any help appreciated and if I can I will put up some pics tomorrow of the plastic thingies...

Yours in desperation hoping someone knows!

Dave

Got a sunroof? yes? Check the drain hoses in the back :)

I know, same here.

Not sure then, My brothers Mk 5 1/2 had the same, I dont think we ever solved it. His Mk6 did it and was the sunroof drain.

I used to get the job of fixing water leaks in the garage  I've had mk4's & a mk5 escort which is the same as mk6 & mk7. The vents you mentioned behind the bumper sometimes let in spray, easy way take bumper off, i'm sure the vents are screwed in place, remove them & cleen them up & the panel, put some silicone or if you can get it drip check on the flanges & once fitted around the edges.
Have a close look at the boot hinges for pin holes in the sealer as thes often let in water & check the weld in this area for the same as they tend to leak aswell
Hope this helps is not i'll have to have a bit more of a think on it :D
I don't suffer insaity ! I enjoy it !!!

Cheers for all your help on this. I think I have narrowed it down to an air vent. However, I have had no time to check properly and fix it so will report back when I have!

I can't quite picture the vents in the boot you mention but I suspect they are there to let air circulate throught he car when the blower is on, they should be designed to not allow air to enter from outside, this can happen in odd circumstances like having the sunroof tilted and all the vents shut.  But you don't have a sunroof.....

It's possible they are leaking a bit, it's also quite lilkey that you are seeing the condesnation form a leak almost anywhere in the car.
