I was being bored (and probably a sad git) but I was looking up on the net how long a transit van is and my caravan then comparing that to an artic lorry.

Well. I havent found out how long an artic lorry is yet but I do know that my caravan and the transit this weekend will be a splash over 43feet long.    any of you truckers out there know the shipping length of your trucks and trailers?

anyway. Whilst typing into Google "length of artic lorry" I found this web site http://www.driving4all.com/search_exp_result.asp?advert_id=14939&vw=1  this is something I HAVE to have a go at one day. Depending on how things go with MOT, Tax and insurance next month I feel a treat maybe heading my way. :D It has been my dream and ambition to have at least a go in one of these HOOOOOOGE monsters. I never knew anyone did driving tasters of this.

They do loads of things on there around the country.

If anyone fancies a passenger one day let me know

Not that you know the length etc off by heart!!!!

So my caravan and the transit van this weekend will be the same length as your trailer. Cool.

One day, just maybe one day I will be able to join you guys on the road. Hopefully in a few months time my job will put me through rigid lorry test.

Anyone know what test I have to do from a 3.5tonne car license to a lorry one? Do I need to do 7.5tonne lorries first then rigids? Would be ace to go direct to rigids. And I am 25 if that helps an answer and I got my license in 1999.

You forgot that your trailer overlaps your tractor unit by several feet so your overall length is probably 55ft

I didnt think of that either. But then again my hitch overlaps the ball of the van by 50mm ish

I might have to have a quick pit stop in the services and park next to a lorry and have a look.

If anyone sees a Red transit van towing a large caravan from DIRFT to Derby area then give me a flash and wave. I will be doing the return journey on Sunday. Obviously not going down the A361 to daventry as it will be closed for retarmacing. I will be heading down the A5 from DIRFT to Weedon then accross to Daventry.

You don't have to go for the 7.5 tonnes first. You can most certainly go for the good ole class 2 straight away.

And if your employer don't put you through it, get it yourself. Well worth it.

Just a thought, But how heavy is your caravan? If you passed your car test after jan 1997 then you can only tow upto 750 kilo's!

It's pants I know, I have just done the trailer test at a cost of £500!!!!!

I don't count unit length from behind the fith wheel as its under the trailer so my trailer is in fact 50 foot long or 55 foot with forklift on .
