Crank shaft seal

I have just changed the rear crank shaft seal on my 90 (disco 200 engine).

I put it all back together and it now leaks more than it did to start with.
I take it I haven't fitted the seal correctly, or could it be some thing I have missed?

is this the same as the 300tdi?
It should have had a guide if it is, and should not be installed if guide is missing.
1995 300tdi 90 rebuilt and on the road (but still a project)

The 300 crank rear oil seal is in an alloy housing thet just bolts on. The 200TDi is just the seal. They should come with a plastic locating sleeve inside to prevent the lip of the seal from reversing itself when you fit it. I used a small amount of locking compound around the outer edge of the seal to keep it in place when fitted and a small amount of grease both on the lip of the seal and the land on the end of the crank where the sweal locates. Unfortunately the only way you are going to know what's wrong will be to strip it back down again - not good news.

Not having any fun. took it all apart again :evil: it was leakinf frm the seal but couldn't see why. so I fitted a new seal using th locator. two days after I fitted it. It LEAKS again :evil:  :evil:  :evil:  :evil:

Cant see why but I am a really unhappy bunny.

Can I have missed something else. might just have to take it to a garage

I wouldn't say that was obvious. I did have to ask which way it went the first time.

As far as I am away its the right way round and is fitted correctly using the plastic locator.

Its not as bad as before but I have a small 2-3" oil stain on the floor over night.

How much damage could I do if I take it off roading tomorrow?

I havent been out for months and I was planning to go to bordon.

I will have to take it apart next week :cry:
