short and sweet, once the pickup is sold (gooing on Auto trader once i can be #prophanity#ed) i`m currently looking at 3options:

1 defender, c reg 200tdi (disco) hard life, few patches but mechanically restored, 12mths MOT, 6 moths tax, tubular front bunmper, chekkerlplate, resprayed met green (not perfect job)reg plate reads c***aos! £2000

1 defender patched chassis origonal TDi 95k, slight rust on bulkhead, otherwise looks VERY clean. P/U ifor williamsback, greenway machos235/85/16 bull bar, chassis repaired, red oxided, and waxoyled. 11mths MOT no tax £2000

or:

j reg Disco 20TDi, used for playing, hence not immaculate, tax and test til december, sills, inner wings, boot floor, arches all been repaired, possibly a few patches on next MOT stickered up with discovery owners club, but not gunna pay £22 to find out the previous owner just put the stickers on, never joined forum etc...
145K, tubular bumper, checkerplate door bottoms, dash cracked in places, 5 door, panels loose, 7 seats, electric pack, 235/85/16 AT`s on alloys, 2" procomp lift with springs & Shocks, polybushed all round, cracked alloy rear bars, correction bushes in front, £1200

disco is looking like the £ favourite, and lots of bits that would go onto a defender/newer disco in a few years time..

long term plan is a 200TDi defender, but the disco seems like a chance to get some goodies, start saving some cash.

although i could just nail myself to a defender now and grovel for some more cash (then hope and pray nothing falls off in first month or two!

defender mate, at least they are worth repairing, discos, and i love to bits, just eat cash and never worth anything, the defenders dont rot quite as catastrophically as a disco, and has a good strong resale value.
my humble opinion anyhow.

disco...have a defender if your doing challenges nuffin else  :roll:
if i didnt compete id have a disco  :roll:
the wheel base is simply better than a 90

Disco. Slightly more comfort, namely you don't have to wind down the drivers window when you want to turn full lock :wink: Had a disco a number of years now, and have driven a 90/Defender as a 'professional driver', and they are brilliant as a work horse, but a Disco is slightly easier on you back.

we looked at changing the disco to a defender a while ago, px'ing plus cash , but after a test drive in a few , there not so comfy in more ways than one,but i have always wanted one,but now ive changed my mind so  we have decided to keep the disco,

plus any mods and extras can be changed over if we decide to upgrade to a newer reg.

seems to be the conclusion that the disco is probably the disco is probably more suited to my needs, we have an open fire, and  free source of firewood.. the disco seems to have that little bit more room inside, but with the confort levels for those trips between durham/yorkshire..

although the points about the defender are valid, deprechiation is not an issue, the true "landrover" that everyone knows, more robust, easier to work on etc..

Tanks a lot for the advice so far, any more is welcome..

does nyone know the vehicle from disco owners club? (J148 UDU)

Go for the 90. Worth more, last longer, perform offroad better. Simpler. Timeless classics.

IMHO it all depends on what you want the vehicle for..

We wanted to replace our Peugeot Estate with a Landrover..I've always wanted on since being a kid  :roll:

Went to look at 90's --- not big enough
Looked at Discos --- just about big enough

Finally bought a 110.. which we all love dearly. Although sometimes for daily driving I really wish I bought a disco..Horses for courses n all that..

Although the comments on depreciation are very valid if money is an issue :)
Hit it till it breaks then hit it some more !

We have a 110 and a Disco.  The 110 is great at somethings (off road, shifting logs etc) but not so good at others (high speed, high mileage driving) where as the Disco is good at high speed, high mileage driving and useless really at shifting logs etc......

Buy one of each!

uses are typically commuting (10miles) trips every month or so to west yorkshire from Durham, collecting firewood, tip runs, shopping (the daewoo matiz is a revolting car, if i have to go shopping.. i drive the truck!) dogs, house restoration stuff ranging from bags of gravel to fence panels, plasterboard etc.. carbootsales (buying & selling) with the trip to pay & play sites, byways, odd lane and occasionally moorland/fields (whilst working with Durham County Voluntery Rangers)

although i dont get out in the mud much, i do like to push it....

Agree with most of the above - about the 90s, anyway!

We have a 90 and a Disco - both lifted and played with - a 200Tdi 90 and a V8 Disco. I genuinely find the 90 more fun to drive, better in town (visibility, parking, etc)... though a bit of a ball ache on a 2 hour plus drive. Its also easier to work on that the Disco and has less bits that seem to disintegrate as soon as you touch them (like most of the internal plastics on the older model Discos, the seats, etc). Having said that the V8 is glorious and is really the Disco's saving grace!

Given what you have discribed above, I'd go with the pick up 90 with the IW cover on the back - sounds almost made for what you want!

Honestly... if I had my time over I would go Defender every time and failing that I'd opt for a RRC before a Disco. Some Disco owners will doubtless disagree, but for what you are planning and what you have to spend, I don't think you'll go far wrong with a Defender.

sorry but a disco will piddle all over a 90 unless in tight woodland on a competition

take it from me my mate has got a disco and its identical in spec to mine
what ive got he had to have, and his will outdo mine pretty much most of the time

only time i come up trumps is when were in woodland or on comps then the 90 shines and i walk all over him  :twisted:

Buy a Disco if you rarely go off road
Buy a 90 if you want to go mud plugging

...otherwise....

Buy a 110, they are more comfortable than a 90 and a lot bigger inside.

I have owned 90s, 110s, RRCs, Discos and Series.

I still say you should buy a 110, just perfect for dogs!

i have a disco i do love the comfort but i have seen some 90s do stuff that i cant  just because discos are to long but wen mine dies of death then ill buy a 90
i only go in as far as my nuts

I had the same dilemma.  In daily use I'm glad I went for the Disco.  However, when I'm hacking around doing utility things (like driving to around Iceland or Norway) I generally yearn for a 110, where you have loads of stowage space to put all your junk, and don't have to worry so much about doing silly things like driving into other Land Rovers  :oops:

The Disco cost me a lot less than a comparable Defender, but then again, if I come to sell it, I'll have lost a lot more to depreciation than I would have if I'd bought a Defender.  So financially a Defender would have been a better bet, notwithstanding the fact I'll probably run it until it dies anyway.

In an ideal world I'd have a Defender with a bit more legroom for the rear passengers, better soundproofing, and air conditioning which doesn't smash in your kneecaps.

i`m looking at putting a deposit on the disco tommorrow, reason been most of the above point to the disco been worth nowt on re-sale, this doesnt bother me much, as i`m looking to persuade SWMBO to let me have a pet 90, which will in time replace the disco (i.e. engine, suspension, back axle etc...)

the comfort factor has also played a part i must admit, i`ve tried a defender, and must confess the "all year natural air con" was a bit grim in winter....
