range rover cutting out
« on: August 05, 2007, 22:54:25 »
My mate has a 3.5 range rover efi which has very recently been converted to carbs by a mechanic. It will start after a while and once started runs perfectly for about 2 or 3 minutes then slowly dies and cuts out, if you leave it for a while and try again it will do exactly the same. It is still using the original fuel pump from the efi so could this be a possibility? Its got fuel going into the carbs, they have been tuned properly and there is a good spark. Anyone have any ideas?????????

IIRC the EFI fuel pump works at a higher pressure than the carb pump which can cause the carb to flood and overfuel the engine.

When it cuts out what are the spark plugs like? If the engone has over fueled then they should be black and wet.

I havent checked the plugs yet. I was thinking that it may be starving it of fuel because when the engine is turning over on the efi pump you can hear it whining but when it is started you dont hear it so much. Is it worth trying a normal pump from a carbed engine?

If you have a carb pump to hand then try running it with that instead.
