What I cannot abide is the way (what I would call) bad language is now an acceptable part of everyday speech while some words are now taboo.  The use of the 'F' word (often preceded by the word mother), the 'C' word, bitch, whore, etc are the language of todays youth and is all too common on television, in popular music and film.  I am not some miserable old git stuck in the 1950's, I just think that such language is more suited to male oriented situations like the workplace, sportsfield, or Landrover garage.  (I particurlarly dislike women swearing, especially in front of, or at, young, impressionable children)

Why is it suddenly ok to call someone a motherfer yet if you refer to a coloured person using the 'N' word you are a despicable racist bigot - look what happened on Big Brother when the 'N' word was used.

I do hear that an American film company, producing a re-make of the Dambusters were so appalled that one of the characters had a dog called Nigger that they wrote the dog out of the script!

Another thing i always wonder about is how proud people are of their country!!!!!
People from Scotland are Scottish,
People from Wales are Welsh,
People from Ireland are Irish; So why oh why,
are people from England............. British???

Apart from that, i agree with above; we (our government) bow to everything to not upset the minorty, why ban nursery rhyms, you now need written permission to take photos of your kids in a play at school, no sports day because of the competition aspect!!!!
It goes on and on when will we be allowed to be ourselves?

i do say so, call me racist if you like (wich seams to happen a hell of a lot when in an argument with an asian person or black person) but on the other hand i also no a few asian and black people that are sound and i have never had any trouble with them. so if i dont like someone i will tell them and they can call me racist all they like, i realy dont care  :D

Its true of most contries. A condition of becomming a landed immigrant often entails proving that you can integrate with their society. Having been through this I can vouch that it applies to Canada and the States too

*Waves Canadian passport*

Sadly I'm not proud to be British anymore, I use that passport when I can rather than my UK one. I'm ashamed of my country and most of what it stands for. Ashamed of this 'roll over and give in to anyone' mentality of our government. While we have to fight for the right to use ancestoral rights of way that as citizens we should be allowed to use, the monority get special rules made up to protect their rights and they didnt even grow up here and its out rights and way of life that suffers. I feel so strongly about it and like Rolla I've just had enough.

I went to Canada and even comming from here I had to jump through hoops, not only prove I can get a job, but prove I wont displace a Canadian Citizen and that I was qualified to do that job. I was then treacked for a year doing that job and told if I left it I need to start over. I had to prove I could live there without any issues and integrate with the rest of the residents and even had to speak french (gah! bloody Quebecois). After two years I got called back and then had to jump through more hoops to get the Citizenship. The difference? Yes Calagary has a huge Oriental and Asian population but its nothing like it is over here where the PC has caused so many deep divides. People just get on with and and persons race and colour really dont matter...

Unless you are British at which point your accent is the source for months of amusement until it fades :)
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Just a thought

Quote
And where once you had the freedom to object, think, and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who’s to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you’re looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn’t be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Janie, you may have a case for sexual discrimination as your opinion has been removed

Also children using bad language in this country is another big issue. Who do we blame for this, forum users, parents, teachers or media? I think we should elect some of the forum mods to act like our own Jamie Oliver to crusade and remove words from the English dictionary that are used far more regular by younger people than their elders

At the risk of getting a lot of incoming flak, I'd like to put my thoughts forward on this topic.
In relation to a Multi-Cultural Society not working, I'd disagree with that. Great Britain has been a multicultural societypossibly since Roman times. A recent poll suggested that the most popular meal in the UK is curry, particularly Chicken Tikka Massala, a dish not known on the Indian sub continent apparently! Our language is a mix of old french, german with a bit of norse and saxon thrown in.
I could go on about the influence of the saxons on place names etc etc, but it would be boring. In short it does work.
I tend to form a dislike of someone if they show certain tendencies e.g, dishonesty, unreliability, manners, and attitude towards others, and I generally say so.
an example of the paradox of Political Correctness, was a stop I carried out on a young white male who was driving his Citroen Saxo at speed, not wearing a seat belt.
After the stop, he instantly accused me of being racist. Being white, I was somewhat puzzled and asked how he had come to that conclusion.
"You stopped me because I'm white, driving a flash car, and because you are not allowed to stop black people and thats racist"
My somewhat bemused response was
"I am allowed to stop anybody if I think they have done something wrong. You were driving too fast, not wearing a seat belt, and your beaten up Citroen Saxo with a glued on spoiler does not, by any stretch of the imagination, qualify as flash. So if you want to complain, go ahead, because you will get laughed out of the station"
As mentioned on other posts, the PC world is becoming more and more intrusive, and as we still live in a democracy, vote out the morons who brought it in!

True... But we are still now more than ever before overwhelmed by so called cultural quarters being set up in our towns and cities.... and these areas in stoke on trent get much more funding than normal areas ie estates where whites are the majority.
We get told to remove union jack flags from our properties... whether they be flown for the queens b/day or some football match..... because they may offend people from ethnic backgrounds.
I never used to be racist... but by christ...this government with its stupid ways is turning me into one.
Guess who's voting BNP this time whether i agree with there views or not.

Again at the risk of sitting on the fence on this subject, but I would ask all those who think that the BNP is the best option to look back over history to the late 20's and early 30's and the subsequent result.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, which thankfully we can have as a result of a war being fought by the UK, the US and other democratic countries against a nation that had been brainwashed by some very clever, devious vicious people.
I would just add that 'immigrant workers' from all races, religons and beliefs fought for the Allied cause.
But hey, I'm not a history lecturer, nor a politician.
I do not have a problem with immigrants, providing they are able to work and be of use to the country and not a drain on its resources. However, I am also of the opinion that more should be done to prevent some of the 'home grown' scroungers carrying on in the way they do.
For instance, why are all the immigrant workers coming here to work on the land? Because the pay is more than they get at home, and also certain members of the indigenous population won't get off their lazy arses to work, because we have created a social system that allows them and it could be said encourages them not to work.
Those who do not have a legitimate claim to asylum, who screw the system, come here with intent to commit crime and acts of terror, should be denied entry, I agree, but those members of society who are 'native' and also abuse the system should also be brought into line.
My last musing on this particular response will be that however you dress up the BNP, they are still a bunch of racist, Nazi based thugs who are only one step away from the likes of the extreme white supremacy morons in the USA.

Sad thing is although swearing is unacceptable to the minority it's now part of everday life, not only confind to the workplace.

But where do you draw the line? Stop watching soaps because of the occasional 'B' word (sorry mods for the disguised word   ), refuse to watch funny blooper programs because someone swears when they forgot their lines, refuse to give to charities like red nose day because they put in a comedy sketch with a couple of profanities?

Swear words are only offence if used in an offensive manner. In my opinion I find it a bit childish if someone is pulled up for dropping a swear word and then gets pulled up with "Arrrrr, you just swore". The best policy I have is to ignore it
