New tyres please?
« on: December 26, 2004, 22:01:27 »
Hi  Can anybody help? Ive just bought a 3.9 disovery, and want a new set of tyres for it. At the moment it has a miss match.
I am new to a 4x4, but would like to do a bit of off roading. Most of the time it would be used on the road as this is the only car i have. Can anybody recomend a set of tyres to get, and a rough price?
Kind regards Geoff
Merry Christmas everyone :P  :P

Hi Geoff.

If you get a land rover magazine (Land Rover Owners, Land Rover World, etc) you'll see loads of adverts in there for sets of tyres. What are you going to use the Disco for?

- If it's an off road toy get some muds (BF Goodrich are popular but not cheap, I had colway muds - remoulds but work well!)

- If it's an everyday car don't get muds, they make a lot of noise, reduce road handling, and make you drink more fuel. Go for all-terrains - they'll get you off the road albeit not through the really sticky stuff, (again BFG are good, Colway AT's apparently have the same tread but wear a lot quicker).

Check out eBay, that's where we got our Colways from for the RRC, the only problem is you can't be sure the wheels are straight, etc. We now use Bronco Grip Edge, it's an agressive tyre with a close centre which we find works well on and off road, but it did need 2" lift as it's a 235/85R16.

Happy shopping  :D

I would think 80% of the time would be normal driving around town and motorway work.it has 235/70/16s on it at the mo.

Sounds like all-terrains are the way to go. Depending on your budget and as a guide www.formula4x4.com have sets of 4 new all-terrains & wheels for about £550, or £240 for remoulds.

205R16's maybe better in some respects as the narrower footprint helps greater weight per inch to get more traction, conversely, the 235/70R16 would work better on some surfaces - welcome to a minefield

Personally I've never had AT's only MT's, I'm sure somebody else can offer more advise on which AT's are best. After spending a couple of hours stuck in a wet clay-muddy lane with a couple of mates with MT's laughing at me I can tell you standard road tyres are no good off road

Or you could go in between the two and go for 225/75/16, like me.

I've had a set of Colway AT's on before 235/70's and was very pleased with them, off road too.

Now running on Good Year MTR's, excellent tyre on all road conditions, expensive though.

Oh Colways are remoulds, but have never read a bad report on them.

Good luck

I have two sets of wheels and tyres for mine, for road use I have a set of 235/70x16 Avon Ranger AT's on "Boost" alloys and a set of 225/75x16 BFG mud tyres on deep dish modulars for the mucky stuff.

It can be a bit of a pain changing them over and I mostly use the BFG's at the moment, I don't find them noisy on tarmac or difficult in the wet, but I prefer the AT's when towing.

Good luck with whatever you choose and don't forget to let us know which way you decide to go.

Agree on the Colway factor.
I've got 235/70 All-Terrains on the Discovery.
Superb all round tyres, just so long as you remember they have limits on-or offroad.

10,000miles+ with no discernible wear showing.

If you have a trawl through the older strings on the forums you will see that opinion is split on the remould versus new arguament.  As you use the car mainly on the road I would agree that you should fit ATs, there are plenty around at various prices new, personally I think remoulds are only any good for playing, there are better ways to save money without risking the small patch of rubber that stops you leaving the road.
You may notice that 205/16 tyres are way cheaper than 225/75 or 235/70.  They are fine but look a little skinny, newer cars have 235/70 as standard and you'll find these cheaper than 225/75 simply because of the numbers sold.

It's time to get on the phone and start ringing round for some quotes, as far as brands go, if you've heard of them then you should be ok.

i was in the same place you were and did what you did mate :?
what i ended up getting was a set of colways at 235/70/16 they arrived at the tyre dealer in two days fitted the same day they were 35.50 each
this was a choice that i was glad of as within a week i put a six inch nail in the sidewall whilst out on the lanes :x  (would have happened to anyone)
the cost of a new tyre all depends what you are going to use it for and also the useage of the landy
there has not been a marked differance in the handling of her and no extra noise etc
at least there cheap if your on a budget :D

The is the one question that you will never find the right answer to as EVERYONE has different opinions!

I spent weeks researching the best tyre when i first got my Disco, went for the Goodyear Wrangler A/T's, nearly £90 each fitted.  Perfect on road, pretty good off road in most situations and there is hardly any sign of wear after 25000 miles which i think is amazing!!!

Good luck in you quest   8)

That's good news because my local garage can supply them for a little over £80 which is a good saving over the BFGs I was going to buy.

I have a set of BFG Muds for off road and as I tow heavy agricultural stuff I have AT's for the road work. I will be getting the BFG AT's once my Fulda's are warn dowm. BFG cost more but you get more milage and thick side walls too.

Nene Vally Off Road always do a very good competertive deal.

I have a pair of 235/70 R16 BFG All Terrains going for £150 delivered if you are interested.  They have only done a 1000 or so miles and are genuinely nearly new.  I have just removed them from my Disco and replaced them with road tyres.

Let me know...
