Back box gone AWOL, DIY or Kwik Fit?
« on: August 22, 2007, 14:57:56 »
Pulled into the driveway in the car, looked at the back of the Disco and realised that the back box is missing!  Thing is, I have no idea of when this happened!  Sorry if it was on the road and you were following me!

So what to do?  In fairness when I've looked at exhausts in the past for other cars, it's almost always cheaper and easier to drive to Kwik Fit or similar.  What are people's thoughts here?  Is it legal to drive in the meantime?  I never even noticed it getting any louder, just started it now and it sounds the same!

Vehicle is a 1995 300Tdi by the way.

Ian,

Sonds like time for a side exit... keeps it up and out of the way of the crud when off road... and (IMHO!    ) looks a bit cool!

I personnally wouldn't touch a Qwik Fit place with a bargepole - after seeing the 'fix' they did on mother-in-laws car (they attempted to weld a piece of an old exhaust on as the pattern part they had wasn't the right size !)

It probably all depends on the state of the rest of your system - if it's ok, then you might be able to fit a new back box quite easily, if the rest of the system is on its last legs...........you'll be fighting a loosing battle !

I would say leave it, but it will fail an MOT not because of emmisions but because the exhaust fumes will hang around under the car and not escape as they should....at least thats what i was told about my disco...so i added some pipe to it.

Sounds good now with one less silencer!!

just weld abit of tube on to it if you have a welder handy thats wot i plan on doing again .and your right about kwifit centers i call them failed macanics but it does make me laugh wen you go into one place and look round and see just how many of them have massive snap on roll cabs with nothing in them wen all they need is a couple of sockets and maybe a 13 and  a 14 mill spanner oh and a hammer
i only go in as far as my nuts

The back box fell  off a brand new exhaust on my V8, and was replaced with a side exit made from old diesel exhaust (they only rust out in one place leaving meteres of good exhaust) which was just the right diameter to slide of the petrol exhaust.

Passed its MOT the other day without comment, though I did keep the back box with the intention of making it clamp on if the MOT did object to the boxless side exit.

Kwik fit etc. use the cheapest sources of exhaust they can find so often they don't fit straight on or catch on the body works so one common tool they use is an oxy-acetaline toruch to heat the exhausts and tweak them to fit.

Skibum...saw you tonight near Sainsbury's, truck looks good on the lift!  PM'd you re that parcel shelf...let me know...might need it for the weekend if you still have it!

Others...welding is not an option, I don't have one, and to be honest I can't be arsed.  Having a quick peek under the truck, the next join seems to be up by the gearbox somewhere, am I right in saying it's fallen off upstream of another join that was presumably just before the silencer?

If so a whole new system might end up being the way to go...GRRRR!!!

Fair enough, though for anyone else interested in doing a side exit a friend did his disco using a piece of exhuats braded flex clamped on where the existing exhaust was cut, no welding required though still had to cut a hole in the body work.

My back box fell off a few months ago, and a mate who's an MOT tester told me it would fail as it needs to clear the body work (as mentioned abouve re fumes hanging about)

I intend to get a piece of flexi pipe and clamp it on to make a side exit, no welding, cheep solution

I wouldn't bother with the back box just use an exhaust clamp an some straight exhaust, far cheaper and the slight increase in noise sounds good, also if your going to weld an exhaust, make sure you give the old part a good clean inside ( near to where your going to weld) to get the carbon off, as welding it reacts with the carbon and won't last very long after the repair, The side exit is always a good option  :D

how do you go about a side exit with flexy pipe? surely you need a small piece after the flexy to make it look normal, which would need to be fixed somehow?

Instead of using flexy, our local boy racer place sells elbows of different angles and end pieces, if they hadn't I'd have used flexy then an end piece like gtomo2, most places like halfords sell end bits for exhausts, just select the one you like

Id agree with the above posts but if you want to keep it standard Ive bought wexhausts from M&M before.. always been very cheap and delivered within a day or two...excellent service, and far far far cheaper than the local Kwik Fit..... they were 80 quid for a downpipe i bought for under 20!!!!

Cheers Steve

Look for bodyshopwarehouse on the net.

Got a complete zook Exhaust from them right back to the manifold for about £100 notes. Then a morning to fit the whole thing.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

on mine, as I used the elbow and an end piece, the standard brackets are enough to keep the exhaust nicely in position and the hole through the side of the body is slightly bigger than the exhaust, I've bought some screen trim for a motor bike an when I get chance (after most of the other jobs are done) I'm going to fit this around the hole to make the job look neater ( hopefully it won't melt  [-o< )
