What could it be then? Started the engine up this moring and white smoke poored out the where the steering wheel is that area. Burning smell aswell. I've been told it may be the heater plug or something which is connected to the iginition. Any ideas?

Sounds like a wiring short, might be advisable to disconnect/isolate the battery until you work on it

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

I had identical sysmptons on an old E30 325i Sport. What had happend is the starter motor had got stuck in the flywheel and shorted out the igniton causing the wires to get hot and melt the connector block.

Result was a new starter motor and all was fine after. Not sure if this will help you but as the symptoms were the same i thought id share my experience with you.

Good luck!
