As you look at the engine from teh front.

The Haynes manual is very precise as I recall.

I got a manual for a 3500 Rover saloon which covered my V8 very well for £1.50 at a charity shop.

Have you got the firing order right on the cap?

A V8 will run given even the slightest sniff of correct timing. I had mine out by a whole lead at one stage. It wasn't happy but it did start and run.

What I had to do was:

Make sure a spark was at the centre lead - if you can't get a spark there then you're stuffed
Then set up the number one lead in the correct position on the cap relative to the dizzy position - again the Haynes manual is good on this
Then I set all the other leads according to that
Then I tried to get the timing not too far off static

Loosen the dizzy clamp
After that it was fiddle until it started
Then fiddle until it sounded sweet
Then I'd get the timing gun on it

But TBH tuning byu ear was OK on my old V8 - yours is probably more sophisticated!

Will give it a go tomorrow.
Yea my timing is a pain as it has to be a 12deg before tdc for the lpg to run

Start it on petrol - that's what I did with the LPG. Or did you say it was LPG only?

If it is can't you rig up a temporary petrol supply?

No it starts on petrol then switches over to lpg. but have it set to just petrol at the moment.

I think that I must have misunderstood the problem. I thought you couldn't start it at all - is that you can start it but it won't run on LPG once started?

I got mine started and running well on petrol and then addressed the LPG which does need different timing but I found that I could be at least 20 degrees out on the timing and it would start and sort of run on petrol.

For LPG I decided to tune for maximum vacuum which I could do as I had a vacuum gauge but I was on carbs and had an early form of electronic ignition. I also found that it was a dead loss relying on the timing marks which on mine were hopeless.

Get the leads right then get it started and just keep twiddling the dizzy round until sounds sweet then see where you are!

Well I'd get right back to basics and why not take a look at

http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/maintenance.html

It might help or get down to Oxfam and get a Haynes manual! Remember the V8 was used in quite a few cars.

Err I think it's the left hand side as you sit in the driver's seat, that's the industry standard.

Quite right left and right trouble - I honestly got them muddled. When laning with a friend we have go left and 'other left' which works quite well.

Anyway looks like it's sorted now.
