Anyone got a part number for the little 2 turn coil over-centre spring that holds the locking/opening mech. into place?

I hear that the whole lock need replacing, but I hope thats wrong! BTW its a 92 200 and the lock is marked GM (general motors).

Niel.

I got one of these springs off Ebay yesterday. Try a search using 'Discovery door latch spring'.  I think there are several people who make them, it cost £9.50 inc postage.  It hasn;t been fitted yet so i don't know if it works!!!

The cars booked in for Monday 10th so ill let you know if it works then.

You can also source these from the Discovery Owners Club, www.discoveryownersclub.com. Personally I would support a local club rather than someone making a fast buck on e-bay with suspect quality parts.

Cheers.

I think the Ebay source is a bit expensive for what they are. I got two pairs from the DOC of another member, sure they were cheaper  :?:

<Moderator's hat on>

First off, the DOC is an international club,  not really a "local" one, not that it makes much difference in context, but let's be correct about it !

Second, the people on eBay can only make money if people are willing to pay their price, as such I don't think they should be accused of making a "fast buck"..  they are providing a service which is clearly needed at a price.

Third, unless there is some evidence that the parts sold by any individual or company are quanitfiably worse than any other, the term "suspect quality parts" is somewhat unfair, and would request that it's use be curbed.

I would agree that everyone should shop around for the best value, and if the DOC currently provides that then it would seem sensible to use them.

I *believe* that it is not the DOC that sells these items, but more a member of the club, whom I believe is also a member of mud-club.

Ok Tim, point taken, sorry.

Leaving aside the issue of door springs I would support the principle that enthusiasts should support other enthusiaists who provide a service, even to the extent of paying slightly more, which I have indeed done. I assure you that in other areas of my life I spend ages shopping around before parting with my hard-earned cash!

Being new to the forums, I am amazed at the wealth of information freely given, and would support this in some small way financially, through club memberships, or through enterprising individuals filling a gap in the market.

Steps off soap box!  :D

Happy New Year.

No worries....  and I agree fully about supporting those who support others...

Of course, the guy on eBay might be an enthusiast too  ;-)

One of the guys on ebay that was quoted in another thread is (and maybe in this one) is indeed an enthusiast but also trying to earn a crust, and doing a good job.
He starts the bidding low on the springs but quotes that they normally cost £10. It's always possible to get them off the person at £0.99 or whatever the bidding ends at as Tom pointed out. After all it is an auction.

By the way, Brian may well be a member of the Mudclub after I recommended it to him telling him what a lovely place it is.

Most people working in the general "classic car " field start of as enthusiasts and end up putting their hobby to work.  I find that people such as this I have encountered maintain a genuine enthusiasm for their hobby and their experience is put to our benifit.

Back to the original question.... I bought a pair of springs through "an alternative source" and paid £7.50 inc postage.

I took the lock apart before xmas to see what exactly had broken 1st. I didn't get round to fitting the spring until the new year. It now works fine.

It was really fiddly to do. Having removed all the connection rods, un bolted the lock assembly, dissconnected the key lock etc etc, I still found it a real pain the get the lock out of the door cavity. I finally got it out and replaced the small spring no problems. I put it all back together (from memory before xmas) and it all now works. I have got one bit left over through (as always) it's a brass cylinder with a grub screw in it, can't work out where it came from as everything works ok without it !!!

The central locking was playing up beforehand, sometimes it would lock and then instantly unlock itself. The broken spring in the rear door lock was obviously the cause as it's now fine.

Well worth £7.50 and scraped knuckles to save myself £100 on a new lock assembly.

Has anybody got a diagram to show where this spring fits,I have won a spring on e-bay but have no idea where to begin, the lock configuration seems delicate to have my mitts attack it.

Pics will help.

I got mine off e-bay too.  Very fast service and good instructions with them.

Yopu don't have to take the lock apart to replace them though, it is possible to slightly bend the mechanism to give the required clearance and then bend it back without a problem.

It did seem to me though that when they decided to build the Disco, the put a set of five springs on the floor and said "Build a car to fit them!"

My spring vendor stated that they would ship the spring along with full fitting instructions, alas, the spring arrived without the aforesaid.

I have used 'contact seller' to gee him/her up and get the instructions sent, but have given up now after a four month wait,I don't want to seem pushy.
