Pulling my hair out..... (memory map trial).
« on: December 30, 2004, 22:57:32 »
:?  Evening all. Just been pulling my hair out due to trying to download a free memory map trial. Youde think it was straight forward, but o no save that, save this, zip that un-zip this, sign agreement, get leicence    All i want to do is have a look at how it works and how it looks. You see im thinking of getting a p.d.a g.p.s system next year after seeing Drums and a lad at works got one in his Def 90. Got to be easyier than trying to read a map whilst driveing. 8)   Think i need to go on a computer course or something.... havein a cig and a brew now to calm me down.
If in first you dont suceed, try second....
If it aint broke, your not trying ard enough....

Regards MIKE.

muky, It all depends what you want from your kit, mine is mainly road based, as I do some serious mileage all over the north of england. That 2 month old defender currently has 7500 miles on it!!

For a kit similar to mine, a package should cost about £350, and I think the only things you will need to add, is the cradle that I was using, and a larger memory chip. I have a 256mb chips and store all the road maps for the UK.

What I'm currently looking at is the OS-Map side for greenlanes etc, I want a system, that I can go anywhere in the UK, without buying extra maps, and I want reasonable detail etc. I'm still waying up the options, so any advice on that side of things wil be most appreciated.

Mike

check out http://www.handtec.co.uk/ and http://www.totalpda.co.uk/ they always seem to be good on price.

A wired gps receiver will be much cheaper than a bluetooth one. If you go the bluetooth route your still going to have cables lying around to power the pda and the receiver, so why not just get the cabled version and save some money.  I bought the hiacom 204s off ebay with cables and holder (acually handtec but cheaper  :) )

If you want it for greenlaning then memory map is great, if you want sat nav with voice directions then you'll need tom tom which will guide you from a to b.

get a big memory card for it. especially if using tomtom. when using it for greenlaning you can you download a portion of the map you need to the pda so you won't need as much memory. I'd go for 256md or above, for memory try here http://www.valueflash.co.uk/

I run mine on an ipaq 5550 with a 256mb memory card, which holds tom tom maps for the UK and NI plus the map sections i use for greenlaning.

if you go the tomtom route also look at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com for plug ins for speed cameras - lpg stations   etc.

Hi
Hubby (Tazman) and I have both got HP 2210 PDAs.  We chose these because it has 2 types of expansion slot - one SD and one compact flash, bluetooth and a good memory size (and cheaper than others!). Run Tom Tom navigator off the SD card and the GPS fits into the compact flash slot - simple :D  :D
Plus, we have some nifty software (pocket GPS) which tells us where all the nasty speed/traffic cameras are and this runs with Tom Tom.
For laning, we use Fugawi UK version 2. This can be downloaded to a PDA and viewed in the car. Again, using GPS.
Hope this helps  :?  :?
