Cannock Chase?
« on: September 08, 2007, 18:23:58 »
I was reading a copy of LRO that was a few years old, there was a feature about organised 4x4 trips through the Chase organised by Overlander Training - does anybody know if these trips are still being run?

Cheers,

Nick

A second for Bofa 4x4 - Em and I have been a couple of times.

It's a very instructional but relaxed and enjoyable day.

I keep meaning to book one of these days myself!  Th fact it books so far in advance cant be a bad sign!

If you have a search, I asked the same question a while back and got loads of recommendations.  Also look for bofa on youtube.

We went on one last year - it was excellent and really well organised.

I'd recommend BOFA4x4 (www.bofa4x4.com) but I'm up there on most events helping Bill n Colin - events are always booked up in advance and everyone seems to have a good day out.

The usual agenda has changed now:

Meet up for Breakfast at The Pines Cafe (on Rugeley Road A460?)

Then off to the 'special events area' for a bit of muddy fun.

This year, we've also ran 3 'navigation challenges' using tulip diagrams, where cars are sent out in small teams, with tulip roadbook and a marshal. Along the way, each team has to find hidden letters or numbers and solve 'special tasks' for a bit of fun.

Hopefully, see you up there soon :D

If you go, keep a look out for us mountain bike riders....was out biking once, warping down a descent and was greeted by a Series 3 coming the other way, I very nearly became embedded in his grille, when I stopped to tell the guy I was a fellow 'laner', he thought I was going hit him !!!!

Thanks for the responses! :D  Good to see that access to the Chase is still possible...

Steve - what appealed to me most about this was enjoying a drive, with some techniical challenges, around the woods - is this still possible? I'm not sure if the change to the format you describe is what I'd be expecting...

Cheers,

Nick

The forestry guys do trips over the Chase, its difficult to get information on this though & it too is booked up early.

Would not recommend this trip if you like a challenge, its just driving round with no technical or difficult areas at all. A few steep ups & downs.  Good for a family hour or so out but thats it.
The trip I went on also had people commenting how fast the forestry vehicle was taking us round, more like an offroad rally! We also had some minor vehicle damage to a friends Navara by going down badly overgrown, tight tracks, Scratches everywhere.

Depends on what your after.

Thinking about it, a few years ago (about 10) there used to be a regular event at the top of Style Cop. You could pay ya money & go play.  It had 3 routes, red, green & black I think.  I remember going with the old man in his Rangie.

This was a bit more of a challenge & you were left to do your own thing.

I wonder what happened to that?

Yes mate - it's still the same format. The 'Navigation Challenge' is just something we run on certain days to try and 'spice it up' for the regulars who fancy something a bit different. e.g. these things are usually done for a nominated day, if for instance there's a Club booking.

The normal format remains unchanged, small group, through the forest n mud; with the usual suspects: Devils Bowel, Ski Slope 1 & 2, Follow Through Hill, Suzuki Hill, Bull Bar, The Jungle, etc to keep everyone amused.

I can't comment on the Forestry run events, as I've never been on one. The BOFA4x4 days are 'all day' not the half day sessions as run by Forestry. For the BOFA days, the Special Events Area is hired by BOFA from the Forestry. Unfortunately, however, you can still get the odd walker / cyclist / horse rider in the events area (even though there's another 20+ square miles to the Chase that 4x4's don't use
